Be Like The Ritz For Your Customers

Mark J. Podolsky describes a family vacation at the Ritz-Carlton where handwritten notes, welcome cookies, and personalized care made the stay memorable. He suggests land sellers copy this approach by sending buyers maps, directions, gift cards, and books to stand out and build loyalty.

Hey, it's Mark Podolski, the lane geek@thelanegeek.com with another episode of Coffee Talk today. Just drinking office coffee. It's just black. It's fine. Put a little agave in it, sweeten it up. Okay, so I just had a wonderful little vacation at the Ritz Carlton. Took my family and the kids, had a great time. There's a water slide. They had this guy named Ranger Ron, and the kids got to play with snakes and scorpions and tarantulas. I know it sounds scary, but they didn't really get to touch them and play with them. They just got to kind of see them. And they had a tortoise, and the food was incredible. We didn't even leave the resort. It was amazing. Why am I even bringing this up? Because there's a few business lessons to learn about the Ritz Carlton, the way they conduct themselves and how we can apply it to our land. Business number one is they create an experience, and that's how they add more value. So I'll give you an example. As soon as we arrived, there was a handwritten note to my children with homemade chocolate chip cookies and milk welcoming them to the resort. Big bonus. Kids loved it. Then my wife gets sick, so I call down and say, you know, my wife is sick. Is there, you know, this or that kind of a helper. Maybe Tylenol or something. So what do they do? Not only do they bring what I asked them to bring, but they also bring a huge tray of tea along with another handwritten note. So, sorry you're not feeling well. Hope this tea makes you feel better. Then they did another handwritten note and brought up a huge quart of chicken noodle soup. All of this unpaid. So, yeah, the Ritz Carlton is expensive, but I feel like I'm getting value for it because they're creating this incredible, lush, exclusive feeling experience. So I don't mind paying the money for it. And the children and my wife, they all loved it. So the same thing applies. When you sell your land, what can you do to provide this incredible experience for your buyer? So we can create an incredible buyer package. Maps, driving directions. Maybe we add some type of, I don't know, maybe an itunes gift card for $10, along with some apps that they can use to. To help them go see their property or an Amazon gift card, maybe send them a book on rural property in the country. Anything that provides more value, anything that provides an extra sense of adventure or experience with that raw land is going to create more value and differentiate you from your competitors. So be creative, be bold, act like the Ritz.
