Mark J. Podolsky (the Land Geek) delivers a short YouTube 'coffee talk' urging businesses—especially in land and real estate—to adopt a clear, pure mission/purpose statement. He recounts a Scott Jurvetson interview (on the podcast This Week in Startups) and cites Tesla and Google as examples; argues that a mission aligns team culture and customer perception. Hey, it's Mark Podolski, the Land Geek. Let's have another virtual cup of coffee together. I'm almost done with this one, so I want to start today with an interesting story. I was listening to a podcast by the brilliant Scott Jurvetson from Draper Fisher Jurvetson, this big venture capital firm, and they invest in famous companies like elon Musk's Tesla SpaceX. I think his first big hit was Hotmail. Lots of mainly tech companies or biotech companies. The guy is brilliant. But during this interview from this week in Startups, I thought it was really interesting and this is what I took away from him, this interesting statement. He said the companies that he found that were the most successful always started with a very clear and pure mission statement or purpose statement. For example, Tesla's was to make the environment better by getting rid of these gasoline vehicles. Google's was do no evil. And I think that can apply to us in the land business or real estate. Because if you're creating innovative land solutions for your customers, for example, they're going to, in a very unconscious way, feel that, that there's a mission beyond just pure profit. Your company in your organization. And it's going to filter down the entire organization from your, your assistants to your virtual assistants and whomever else you're working with. It's going to create this very sort of symbiotic culture, if you will, that everyone's on the same page. This is our purpose. This is why we wake up in the morning. This is what we're doing. It's not just pure profit. Obviously, every company needs to make a profit to stay in business, so that will come. But the takeaway is start with a pure mission statement. Take some time, think about it. And there's lots of resources online to help you do that.
