Hey, it's Mark Podolski, the lane geek with Jay Massey. Cashflowdiary.com Jay, how are you?
Good so far. And yourself?
Pulse is still normal, respiration is fine. Let's have a virtual cup of coffee together.
Sounds like a plan.
So, Jay, I've been podcasting and the same kind of theme keeps coming up when I ask people about their morning routine. And like the fourth person now said they take a cold shower and they swear by it. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
On purpose.
On purpose. It's like, you know, it gets their heartbeat up, they're energized, it wakes them up. It sounds miserable to me. I'm glad that your reaction is the same as mine. I honestly, I did try it and it was miserable.
I'm not even going to try it, I'm just going to say it's miserable. I mean, at the end of the day, that's not something I'm looking forward to under any stretch of the imagination.
Right, right. It's like, okay, so why not sleep on a bed of nails?
Just as comfortable.
Yeah, maybe that'll make you more productive.
All right, so I want to know.
What, what does Jay Massey do in the morning to start his day to make him more productive? Get him in the mindset of work and productivity and accomplishing what you want to accomplish for that day.
Got it, Got it. Well, the beginning thing to understand is I have four children, so 18, 7, 5 and 4. And that four year old is up like clockwork all the time early. So I get the privilege of hanging out with him and them in the morning a lot. So that, that tends to occupy the beginning parts of my day. But however, when I transfer from, you know, we'll call it daddy mode to work mode, it's typically for me, I have to take some time of spiritual reflection, reading the Bible, praying. Those things tend to flush all those emotions. I'm a very hyper emotional man and I've gotta control those things because, you know, every email, every phone call, who knows what could happen next? One of the dangers as an investor is letting your emotions dictate your choices. And we receive lots of inputs every day that affect us emotionally. And I could go from completely fine and the next email I get could literally be. And again, this shouldn't shock anybody, cause it's real estate. Right? It could literally be a building is on fire and it's because buildings catch on fire. And I'm not saying that to scare anybody, but that's reality. I mean, I've had those moments and you've got to find a way to be emotionally stable. That happens to be one of the most important things, in my opinion, for my business in order for me to be productive.
Yeah, I love it. I do something very similar. And so my big thing is like, when I wake up, don't check my email very hard. Bad idea. That's been my thing. Then I get to the office, I meditate for 20 minutes. I use headspace. Well, first thing I do is I work out. Then I take my kids to school and then get to the office, meditate, still don't open the email. And then look at my calendar. My most important tasks.
Don't blame me.
And then I'm like, okay, don't open it, don't open it. And I try not to look at email till 10. 10 and 4 are my days, are my times.
That's a good one. That's a good one. I probably should adopt that whole don't look at the email before 10 thing. That would probably be helpful. How old are your kids?
So I've got three. My oldest is 14. My middle is 11. My baby girl is 10. So two boys in her girl.
Oh, okay, got it. So, well, at least you're past the babbling. Excited to be up at 5:30 in the morning stage.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But you know, I kind of missed that where, you know, come on over anytime.
Come on over. I'm just telling you, they are definitely still lively every. Every morning.
All right, well, you know, you got four, so next coffee talk, I'm going to ask you for parenting advice, especially with my teenager.
Oh, okay. Well, I can understand that one.
