A short YouTube-style talk by Mark J. Podolsky (the Land Geek) reflecting on Jeff Colvin's argument in Talent Is Overrated: extrinsic motivation can be used to bootstrap intrinsic motivation. Podolsky relates this to his land-investing coaching—students pushed to act (e.g., make offers) often develop internal drive as they see results—and closes with calls-to-action for resources on thelandgeek.com.

Hey, it's Mark Fedolski, the lane Geek with thelanegeek.com let's have another virtual cup of coffee together. Still sticking with that black coffee. Bulletproof. Alright, so in Jeff Colvin's book Talent is Overrated, he makes an interesting argument which I completely agree with because I see this all the time in my coaching students. It's that motivation first has to be extrinsically, extrinsically thrust upon us. So that is with my coaching students. They know that I'm going to get on them if they aren't making at least 100 offers a day, right? Compared to the person that's doing it on their own and there's no one pushing them. So Jeff Colvin uses the example of children being forced to take piano lessons and pretty soon they become internally motivated as they continue to see their improvement and the progression. And the same thing happens with my land investing students in the sense that as they start to see they get their offers accepted, they start doing deals, they start making money, they become more internally motivated to continue working harder on their business and eventually accelerating their progress. So there you go. If you don't have somebody pushing you to help you get to where you are now, to where you want to be, I highly suggest doing that even if you can't afford perhaps a coach or a mentor, find someone to do the business with you push each other.
