The One Skill You Need to be More Productive

Mark J. Podolsky uses Parkinson's Law—work expands to fill the time available—to structure his day in focused blocks: 8-9am thinking, 9-9:30 video, 9:30-10 blog. He schedules meetings with himself, batches email into one time slot, and cuts distractions to get more done.

Hey, it's Marc Podolski, the lane Geek from thelanegeek.com with another episode of Coffee Talk. Today I want to talk about productivity. So how do you get more done in your day than you otherwise normally would? It's just knowing a certain little law called Parkinson's Law. What's Parkinson's Law? Parkinson's law states that work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion. So if you only have an hour to get something done, you'll get it done in an hour. If you only have a half hour to get it done, you'll get it done in a half hour. If you only have five minutes to clean up the house, you'll do your best to clean up that house in five minutes. So let me give an example of how I actually use this to my advantage to get more done. So what do I do? First thing I do in the morning, I don't check email, I don't check Facebook, I don't check Twitter. I don't do anything. Take a deep breath, clear my head and I think about what are my wigs for that day, my wildly important goals, what are the most important things, the revenue producing activities that need to get done for that day. And then I start putting them on my calendar. So 8 o' clock is my quiet time to think. So from 8 to 9 I actually schedule a meeting with myself. That's right, Mark meets with Mark. Don't take any phone calls. I don't answer texts, I don't check email, I don't do anything. I just think for that hour about whatever I want to think about as it relates to either my business, my personal life, the two combined. I don't care what it is. That's my hour undisturbed. From 9:00 o' clock to say 9:30 I might make a video. From 9:30 to 10:00 o', clock I might blog. From 10:00 clock to 10:50 I might manage my virtual assistants. From 10:50 to 11:50 I might work on some marketing for some land that I'm trying to sell@frontierpropertiesusa.com From 11:50 to 12:30 I might eat lunch. From 12:30 to let's say 1 o', clock I might review the virtual assistants work. From 1:30 to 2:15, I'll attend to my action items. So I have in my email. If you send me an email and it's something that I have to reply to, it'll go into the Attend action Items folder. I'll go through and I'll just answer those emails during that time. So you can see that I break down my day and I only give myself so much time to get that activity done. If I get it done earlier, then great, I have more time to do what I'd like to do at the end of the day if I take more time than is allotted. Usually that doesn't happen with Parkinson's law, but if it does happen, then instead of getting home by say 5 o', clock, I might get home at 6 o' clock because I need to get everything done in that day so I only have so much time. I allot myself so much time to get those activities done. Anyways, try it yourself and I hope you're getting a lot out of this Coffee Talk hey, thanks for having a cup of black coffee with me this morning. I really appreciate it.
