The Real Reason AI Is Not Producing Value in Your Business | Clarity at the Top podcast

Thomas Anglero explains why AI investments often fail to deliver value in businesses. He recommends treating AI like a high-value advisor for strategy and analysis, demonstrating its use publicly to set expectations, and appointing internal AI champions to drive adoption across teams.

Is this how you see AI in your business, in your company, in your industry? But let's talk to your, your business as a leader, that AI adoption is increasing, but business value is not. Does that reflect your feeling with the numbers you're seeing on your spreadsheets when you do your weekly or monthly review on spend and cost versus return? Do you wanna know why? Hard truth. It's you. Let me explain. To get the, to get anything out of AI, you have to be an AI leader. You have to extract that value from the AI yourself, and you have to start using it. How do you start using it as an AI leader? I'm gonna talk to you in this frame. Okay. Not attacking. I'm explaining. As an AI leader, let's just use, again, we'll stick to ChatGPT. We can use Claude or Google Gemini. I'll just use ChatGPT. They're all good. When you use ChatGPT, well, first of all, you gotta use ChatGPT. Okay. And when you use ChatGPT, you're not just asking it questions or fix this email or fix my grammar. That's the way I think most people use ChatGPT or any AI or Google Gemini or whatever. As an AI leader, you as an executive running a company, how you're supposed to be using AI is that you, first of all, You're not supposed to be typing with AI. You are talking to your AI. Your AI is your €10,000, $10,000, peso, yen, I don't know what currency you're in, advisor, your 5-star advisor who's super expensive, has an expensive suit, flies in when they need you, you need them, and they have all this knowledge in industry. They're able to produce tremendous amount of PowerPoints, graphs, give you solution, give you strategies. That's what you got with your AI, and that is who you should be talking to 24/7. Are you talking to your AI as if it's your chief strategy advisor? Are you talking to your AI as if it is your CFO, your CMO, your COO? Now you might be going, I already have them. I have a chief CFO. I have a CMO. I have a CEO. I have, I have everybody. You're missing the point. Your AI is not replacing them. Your AI is making them better and making you better as a CEO, as the leader of your group. Say you're not the C-level. Say you're just leading a group. You're utilizing your AI to take the input you're getting, the data, the reports, the conversation you just had with one of your colleagues, whatever role they you have, and you tell the AI— remember, you're talking to your AI. This is your advisor. Between this person, between your AI and you, just you two are having this conversation. This is not embarrassing. No one else knows you're having this conversation. I'm at the point where I walk down the street, or if you see me walking in the woods, I'm talking on my mobile phone the whole time, blah blah blah blah blah. I don't care anymore because I'm getting so much value out of it. Out of it on a personal level and also on a business level. You ask the AI, you have a conversation. Hey, I just came out of a meeting with, let's, Juan. And Juan reports that our sales are down with this one client. We're stuck because the client doesn't believe us. We're beginning to lose trust and value with that client. Our service reports show that we're about 98% on delivery to them. Their happiness is going really well. We've had a really good 3, 5 years with this client, but the trust is declining. Why? Isn't that a question you would ask like a Gartner consultant or Boston Consulting consultant or McKinsey consultant? That's the question you ask the AI. And remember, the AI has access to almost all the data on the internet. And you know, all these AI companies have purchased private datasets as well and is able to connect all the dots. And it has real-time search. So it can look at all the things that are going on in the market. Let's say is that, that customer is a milk company or a shoe company, whatever industry, it doesn't matter. It look at what's happening within that industry in that specific geography that say they're in Spain, say they're in Mexico, say they're in El Salvador, it doesn't matter. And it'll compare it. It'll look at all that's happening in that region. Look at happening in the world. Look at the region historically, geographically. And come back to you in seconds. Maybe if it's really thorough research, I've done some that has taken 25 minutes. So I could go maybe have some lunch, have a snack or something, or have another meeting, right? Have another Teams call or a Zoom call, get off of that. And when I'm all done, instead of me waiting 3 months for a whole team of 14 very expensive consultants, in 25 minutes I have a complete deep dive analysis of that client and what they're experiencing with advice on what to do with specific action points, with graphs, and also predictive charts saying if you do option A in this strategy A, you'll probably have this outcome. Strategy B, this outcome. Strategy C, this outcome. And then the hybrid where you do a little A, a little C. That's what you have been expecting from consultants. I mean, this time, at this time of the year where Times are difficult. You may not want to hire a consultant, or maybe you've always wanted to, you never had the budget for a consultant, but you have the AI. You're an AI leader. That's how you use AI. That's how you get business value out of it just for you. And when you give value for you, it gives value for your company. So that's one reason why. Your company is not getting business value out of your AI implementation. AI implementation going up, business value going down. Second reason how to get AI value as you as a leader, you as a CEO, or you head of your group, or you as an up-and-coming leader. Number 2, how do you show your people that you're an AI leader first. That's critical. You want your people to utilize AI all day long. Why? Because a person who's using AI is able to do more because they get their answers quicker, right? More thorough answers, more thorough, more thorough answer. And also more options for answers. Sometimes you just don't need the answer. You need a select of different answers and possibilities to expand your mind, to go, hmm, to reflect. I only want employees who are reflective. I don't want everybody's a robot. 1 1 2. Done. Nay. 1 1.2 1 point. 8 equals 3. 2.6 plus 0.4 equals 3. Okay, there's many ways to get into that answer. How do you show your people you're an AI leader first? Here's a quick and easy way. Let's say you had— if you're a CEO, you have a leader group, maybe 4 people, maybe 14 people, maybe 24, maybe 40. You're head of whatever, you're head of your group and you call a team meeting. You have your group meeting. What I want you to do to show them, or as we call that, flexing, that you're an AI leader first, without making any big deal about it, you tell all of them, I need to have a one-on-one with each and every one of you. It's time for your yearly review. Let's do something as simple as that. Everybody has that. And then you go to your AI. Let's use Google Gemini this time to be fair and say, Gemini, access the leadership team or the supply side team or the accounting team's calendars. I'm, I'm here in a meeting with all of them right now. Access all their calendars and book a 1-hour meeting with me, one-on-one with them in all their calendars. What are openings of mine in their calendar over the next 2 weeks? Do that now. Find an open time slot between us and book the meeting and send the invite right now. And also the meeting's gonna be in my office. That's the location. Send it now and put down your phone. And this is what you do in the front of your entire team. And then you say, Okay everyone, would you do, please do me a favor, just accept my immediate invite. Because they all, and right now in that moment, will have a media invite for one-on-one. It's done. And they're all gonna be going, what the hell just happened? Wait a minute. He didn't, he, he talked and it happened. You are an AI leader first. That's how you flex. That's how you train your people to your level expectation for them. Because if you, there's no big deal to tell my AI and instruct it and is actually doing things that are important and critical, then they, that's your bar. Then they have to lift themselves to your bar. That's the minimum. They should be booking meetings. They should be responding within seconds. And getting things done. Not, oh yeah, I gotta have a meeting for this guy. Yeah, yeah. Okay. All right. All right, Phil. Oh, back to Juan. Okay, Juan, talk to you later. Yeah, I'll set up a meeting for you next week. Oh, no, it's done. It's done. By the time you hang up the call or you say, hey Juan, great, the meeting's set up. You're an AI leader. You flex, you show them how you act. They will start to realize that I better get on the ball. I better start doing what he's doing at a minimum, right? Because almost everybody thinks the boss is idiot, no offense to you, but that's how you show them you're an AI leader. And then the third way is expect them to have trouble in the beginning to use AI. Have a champion in your office who's some AI super freak who loves AI, and have that person— give that person the time and the freedom to go help them and to get them up and running, and then they will take off. Those three things as a leader you need to do to be an AI leader first, and then your business expectations, your business value will increase and you'll not be like every other company who's making massive investments in AI and getting minimum amount of business value. Business value comes from the leader. It comes from you. Business value is reflective about how much, not about how much you use AI, but how much you've embraced it, internalized. Where you're using AI so much, you don't, it's not about I use AI, who cares? I use AI so much. I'm, it's just me breathing. It's, it's, it's just, it's not even the discussion. It's almost as if, here's a good one. Do you ever meet somebody and you introduce yourself? Hi, I'm Thomas Anglero. Hi, do you use email? It's the stupidest, most embarrassing question you could ask somebody today, right? Who doesn't use email? That's the same thing telling somebody, hey, I use AI. Do you use AI? Once you use it, it is a tool that gets integrated in how you work and how you lead. So be that leader. Have it a part of you. Have access to almost all the world's knowledge, have access to infinite number of leaders, infinite number of industries at all time. And then show your leader, show your people, flex right on them and show them how to use the tool without even mentioning that is AI, just making it seem like nonchalant. This is who I am. Then you get massive amount of value. Business value at an AI investment and your AI implementation. I hope I haven't upset you. I'm Thomas Anglero. This is the Clarity at the Top podcast. This podcast is a weekly podcast and I enjoy it thoroughly. Let me know what areas you want me to deep dive into. I have tons of stuff I love talking about and I'm just going to keep on going. But I'm starting to get messages from leaders all over the world, and one of the areas I'm going to go to in the next podcast— I'm pretty, pretty sure I'm going to go into— is the fact that the frustration leaders have that there's no one to talk to at their level. They, they all are— their calendars are full, but there's really no one who understands what they're going through. So if you think I should talk about that next, uh, podcast, let me know. But I think that's, um, something that we need to talk about. All right, have a good one. Until next time.
