LAUNCHING A SCIENCE MUSEUM AND MY 17th BIRTHDAY! | Vlog

In this vlog, 17‑year‑old Tilly Lockey documents her birthday weekend, which centers around the VIP launch of a science museum exhibition that showcases her prosthetic hands and related technology. The video interweaves personal moments—pre‑birthday preparations, family interactions, and a stay in a hotel—with event coverage that includes a panel discussion, a tour of the exhibition featuring high‑definition silicone prosthetic hands, and reflections on how prosthetics influence her identity and public perception. Tilly also shares casual scenes of meeting her boyfriend George, dining at restaurants, shopping, and enjoying Krispy Kreme donuts. Throughout, she discusses the ethical and societal impact of prosthetic technology, her feelings about being labeled a "cyborg," and the excitement of celebrating her birthday with friends and family.

Hey everyone, it's Tilly. Welcome back to my YouTube channel. What's the date? It's the 6th of October 2022. It's the day before my birthday, and today's video is gonna be a little bit of like a vlog. Um, it's my birthday tomorrow, so I'm vlogging my sort of birthday weekend. But also, there's just so much going on. Later on today, I'm going to a VIP launch of the museum that we've been working on, which Um Monix and my legs are featured in, as well as myself, on a video that I filmed a while back. I have like a short on here of where we filmed it in this really cool lightsaber area. If you've seen that, or you might not have, you can check it out. Last night we went to the press launch breakfast and I actually got to go through the museum. I'm going to attach loads of clips here now because it was so much fun. As if they literally put me like directly next to Iron Man. This is for Iron Man and then there's me. I feel like massive As you can see, we had a great time, and that's what I thought kind of tonight would be. We'd just go through that again, and it was up in that area. But no, it's a whole party and there's like celebrity guests and all sorts, and I'm gonna film it all for you and me to reflect on and be in this video. We've just come back from a meeting and it's sounding like it's gonna be awesome tonight. We need to be there at quarter past 6. They're gonna turn like the downstairs of the museum, so the main bit, into like a really cool space. I think there's live music, they have really cool lighting, there's gonna be a stage. I'm gonna get up and do an interview. I'm on the panel with a lovely man called Ian, um, and it's just gonna be so much fun. It's way bigger getting more like party-ish than I was expecting, so I'm super excited. And I'm getting to meet up with my boyfriend George. He's coming at about 3 o'clock, and we also have to go meet my dad who's just come, and he's trying to find his way now, isn't he? He's trying his best. I need to top up the red lipstick, but for now I'm gonna have the best day. We're gonna go meet my dad now because he's probably lost somewhere. But on my last day being 16, let's go! Hi guys, this is the most awkward angle, but we'll have to deal with it. We have been absolutely slumming it in the hotel the past couple of days. Like, there was no water, there was no kettle. You know, every hotel needs kettle, you know? And I've been missing my cup of coffee, my cup of teas. Anyway, now I've moved out, I'm in this new hotel now, and we have water. As you can see in the background, oh, this is really luxury. I've been wearing these trainers all day. If anybody knows me, you know these are the trusty trainers, right? I wear them all the time and they're so ruined and they need to go in the bin and they need to be replaced. But I feel like everybody has that one pair of shoes that are just the shoes, like they're just your shoes. They just fit so well and they're so comfortable and they're just so convenient. And my mom's trying to make me do the transition right now into some other shoes, which I love the shoes, guys, I really do. But nothing compared to the OGs. So I was quite calculated when I was moving out and packing my bag. I saw the boots on the floor and I'm thinking, I'm not gonna pack them because I don't want to wear them. And I feel like this matters anyway, so whatever. I was like, I'm not gonna pack them. So then I left and we got like halfway down the flight of stairs because there's no lift in this hotel, bear in mind. I went quite high up. Um, I was halfway down the stairs, my mom goes, have you packed your boots? And I was like, okay, I came clean, I was honest. I was like, no, because I didn't want them. I did think about it, but I didn't want them. And she just was just like, Tilly, if you— if you dare show up wearing those trainers— and she made me go back and collect them. She doesn't trust me at all because I'm going to an event about like prosthetic hands. And she's like, Tilly, the key's here, don't lose the key, don't you dare show up in those white trainers, and remember please to bring the hands. Because trust me, to come up to a prosthetic like celebration scientific event all about technology and all about the hands and just be like, yo guys, I don't actually have the hands, but Check out my YouTube channel, I talk about it a lot. Obviously I'm gonna wear the hands and that. She's just paranoid and I'm telling her, Mom, don't need to worry, I understand. But I was thinking maybe I should wear the trainers just like to be funny. I don't think she'd find it funny. Anyways, I'm waiting for George now. His train has been delayed a little bit. He was supposed to be coming in at 3, now it's like, uh, a little before 4. It is currently 10 to 4, so he should be getting to London now and then he's gonna come to this new hotel with the water in the kettle, and I'm gonna collect him upstairs. Then we're gonna chill for a bit and then probably go out for a meal that we've booked at this place called Megan's, then go straight to the event. I'm so excited. Oh, actually, quick fit check. Now you can see it more. This is the dress, and it doesn't really fit, so unless you have a bobble in the back, and that's always the case. This dress is from Cyberdog. I love it so much. It feels very fitting for the event, and there's also I saw this little like reflective heart bit.
Yeah.
Oh my God, it's George!
Oh, hello!
Wait, actually, I'm not gonna invite you again. We're getting ready, gearing up for the VIP launch party of Voyage to the Edge of the Imagina— No, it's not!
Oh, I know. I hate you!
We're getting ready, gearing up for the VIP launch party of the Voyage to the Edge of Imagination exhibition, which these unicorns featured in, and I'm so excited. It's going to be great. We're going in, we're going in.
Oh, it's like a full-on thing, so I crouch.
We are here in the science exhibition.
How do you feel, George? Uh, yeah, good. I like it. My room is the next room, so right now we're looking at some astronauts. Astronauts, right? We got to jump quickly through the wormhole.
I'm literally standing in it, but then we need to go quick.
We're in an alien planet.
This is an alien planet.
Oh wow, it looks like squids in the ceiling. I'm worried we're gonna break it. There's an alien behind us. Disgusted.
Hate it.
I like it, it's cute. Do you see it? I see it.
I see it.
I think I see it.
I actually like being kind of referred to as a cyborg just because I feel like I am a bit sci-fi nerd. Science fiction and sci-fi, and it's really cool.
Next to Iron Man, there we go.
They were so set in high-definition silicone with freckles and nails you can paint, but still these hands couldn't open wide enough to hold a cup. And it's like, what is the vision here? The goal is to make me blend in. Um, and I feel like for me growing up, that really sort of creates belief in me, strong belief that it wasn't okay to look different. And that's why now I'm so grateful for all the learnings, and I make a thing out of getting onto the COVID though, it sparked us because, you know what, it's just being able to finally show up and not be told that it wasn't okay to be who you are. And that's what I talk a lot about, expression and things. Now, I wouldn't believe that we'll get to the point where these prosthetics will be better than human limbs, and a lot of people are very scared by that, but I feel like you need to look at it in an ethical perspective and realize how much this technology really is helping so so many people. It's given people arms back, it's given people the ability to walk again, like people who are paralyzed have been able to walk. People are getting like hearing aids. All of that, people really forget all the good that technology does. So that's not a preachy one, but—
It's my freaking birthday!
Good morning, coming to you on the 7th of October. As a 17-year-old on my birthday. This is not focusing. It's my family.
Yay! Yay!
Tilly's birthday! Krispy Kreme.
Krispy—
Krispy Kreme. Krispy Kreme. Tilly likes all of these ones. I'm obsessed. I literally will never try anything else. I was gonna say, she's never tried another Krispy Kreme donut ever, but we only could get 8. So there's 4 extra ones that she's got to try. There's 8 chocolate Ringo Dots and then experimental size. Yes, exactly. You never know, that might become one of your favorite ones.
It's probably good for me. I think I needed that.
They look lush.
Yeah, they do.
So boy has planned the day today.
Where are we going, George? The Ivy.
Going to the Ivy, which is—
it's like Spenny restaurant, like fancy kind of. Oh damn.
We're super excited. Apparently there's like all sorts, and I'm indecisive and I always have eyes bigger than my belly, so I'm gonna get carried away. Probably pancakes, I'm gonna say that now.
I think— what about you? I'm tempted by pancakes as well, I'm not gonna lie.
So turns out they don't actually have pancakes, but we are having a great time right now. I got, um, chicken marronnese, which is basically— what are you?
What?
Milanese.
Milanese. Chicken Milanese. Um, it's basically hamburger chips from Webbsby's, my all-time favorite food, but made posh. So let's go! Doesn't it look insane? Oh my God, what'd you get?
I got a fish cake with a poached egg on top. Yum!
Oh my God, I'm so excited. Let's get in. Great, come on, pop that egg!
Oh my God, that's why you got the poached egg. So good.
Oh, oh man, wow.
Don't film my card numbers. We're getting the tube. Where are we going? Uh, Green Park. And then, um, wait, no, we're actually not going to Oxford Street. We're going to We're shopping basically.
Yes.
Hey, we're in the mall, we're going to get some pictures. Trying to balance my phone precariously.
It's going to fall, trust me. Printing, yay! We found Another photo booth. Filters. Ah, sick! That's quite nice. This one's quite nice. See you next time on Photo Booth. Should we get some? No, we just got some. So we stopped in a nice cafe. They've got like all the beans on the wall and you can pick your like beans.
I thought it was cereal, but they're just very fancy beans.
I think you can buy a bag of beans. Oh, I've got beans.
Then we went to Vicinity in London at Tower Bridge for our GWIP meeting. Here's a couple pictures that we took, and Oscar absolutely loved taking these pictures of us all night.
He didn't.
He was so annoyed. But thanks, Oscar.
I love you.
We just got in, um, we're in Kent for the weekend. Um, had a great birthday. And what we doing tomorrow?
Movies.
Do movies. I'm making dinner. Mhm.
And I got this I haven't shown my birthday dress that my mom got me.
Cute little birthday dress from Old Polly. It's pretty cute. Yeah, happy birthday me, I'm 17.
Ew.
Yeah, featuring my bathroom in the background. You're so cute, man. No.
Hello, so that was my birthday weekend. I am ill again, like I was like at the start of this video, and we're like 2 weeks later. Um, and again, so yay! But I had the best birthday weekend, birthday 4 days ever. Honestly, couldn't fault it. I had such a good time. And I actually woke up on my 17th birthday and I was looking for a certain video, um, and I couldn't find that video. But what I ended up looking at was a video about me on YouTube, which was basically the presentation that my family made for me. When we were all doing fundraising right in the beginning. It was all about how I nearly died and everything, and if you saw my previous video, it was all like, oh, scared to age and things like that. But I saw that video on that morning and it put everything into perspective. I somehow stumbled across that on my morning of my 17th birthday, and I was just really grateful. So super grateful. And happy to be 17. Grateful for the people in my life who make it incredible every day. And yeah, happy birthday to me.
