Tim Seymour (Profit First Professionals UK & Ireland) narrates a podcast case study describing how a family-run electrical business (brother David, sister Sarah, and their parents) used the Profit First methodology to get out of persistent overdraft, fund VAT bills, and start paying owners consistently. Starting in January after a quiet December and urgent VAT and annual bills, they implemented Profit First: completed an assessment, separated owners' pay from staff wages, opened income and operating accounts and other 'pots' (VAT, materials, subcontractors, profit, owners pay, tax, salaries). They began weekly allocations (12.5% to a VAT pot every Wednesday), built habits and accountability, and by March made full Profit First allocations including profit. By June the VAT pot covered a £13,500 VAT bill, the next VAT (~£14,000) was covered, they halved their overdraft between January and June, made a first profit distribution (£1,000 split between vault/emergency fund and owners), and were consistently paying salaries and owners' pay. Key takeaways given: start where you are, clarity creates control, Profit First is a behaviour system, and celebrate small wins. The podcast promotes profitfirstuk.co.uk and finding certified Profit First Professionals.
