Tisha Morris shows how to decorate a long, rectangular room by anchoring the design to the fireplace. Use an 8 × 10 area rug to visually square the space and hang vertical artwork to draw the eye up and shorten the room's perceived length.

Hi, I'm Tisha Morris, and today I'm gonna help you decorate a long rectangular room that has a fireplace and door. Not every floor plan is perfect, and we often have rooms that can be challenging to work with. A long rectangular room with a fireplace and door can be especially tricky. Today I'm gonna give you some easy ways to make it much simpler. The first step is identifying the focal point. Every room has a focal point, and for this room it's the fireplace, so I'm gonna decorate around the fireplace. Having a large area rug will help bring the length of the space and make it more cohesive. Here I have an 8 by 10 rug that helps make the room seem not so long and actually more of a square shape. It also creates a conversational area around the focal point, the fireplace. Using artwork that's vertical will help move the eye up as opposed to across the room, so it minimizes just how long the room really is.
