Canada is not broken.

A speaker argues that Canada's "broken" narrative is political fear-mongering. Rents fell for twelve straight months, housing starts jumped 19%, and permanent wages grew 3.5% year-over-year. He launched canadaisnotbroken.org to counter misinformation with data.

One of the most powerful tactics that salespeople have in their arsenal is fear. If you can scare someone, you can sell them anything. And fear is also the sales tactic that political leaders use to manipulate their base. When they say Canada is broken, they're not offering insight, they're running a pitch. Fear lowers your guard, it makes you stop asking hard questions. So is Canada broken? Let's look at just 3 data points. First, housing. Rents across Canada declined last month. That wasn't a fluke. It was the 12th rent decline in a row. New housing starts in urban centres jumped nearly 19% year over year in September. Look, it's not perfect. We obviously need more housing, but broken? How about jobs? Wages for permanent employees rose 3.5% year over year. Last month, Canada added 67,000 jobs and the unemployment rate fell. The Canada is broken mythology is the— laziest form of public discourse. And it is easily disproven. And today, I'm gonna make it even easier for you to do just that. I've launched a new website: canadaisnotbroken.org. There you will find real data, not crap from someone's blog or juiced-up fantasies from right-wing think tanks. Actual data. So the next time some yahoo in a Facebook group says Canada's broken, show them the real numbers. We're not perfect here. We still have a lot of work to do, but we cannot let fear overwhelm us into inaction. You don't fix a nation by convincing people that they're beyond repair. You fix it by reminding each other that progress, while sometimes slow, is happening. If we keep choosing that, if we keep choosing each other, eventually the people selling panic will run out of customers. Canada's not broken. The proof is right in front of us. The only question now is whether we're brave enough to believe the evidence instead of the outrage.
