I’m sorry, #Newfoundland.

A creator apologizes for repeatedly mispronouncing Newfoundland, comparing past attempts to skidding across the Trans-Canada without snow tires. The mistake disrespects the province's identity and heritage, from Corner Brook to its cod legacy.

Alright, you may have heard the controversy, so I am here to address what is out there and to set the record straight. Apparently I have been mispronouncing this territory, or province as they like to call themselves. I called it everything from Newfuhnland to Newfounland, and I'm here to apologize. I treated it like a word on a spelling test, not the name of a proud fog-kissed rock of resilience and humour and 11 different kinds of cod recipes. I was a tourist in the realm of diction. I drove my mouth like I was skidding across the Trans-Canada in January. No snow tires, just arrogance and poor planning. But come on, it's not just me. The rest of Canada has been mispronouncing it since Confederation. Every election cycle, someone in Ottawa tries to say it right and ends up sounding like they swallowed a spoon. You get MPs going, "New Finland," like it's IKEA furniture. Look, I recognize we do mess up, and when we do that, we don't just offend geography, we offend the culture and the ancestry and likely the entire cast of Come From Away. So here it is. I'm sorry. Not in a generic PR way, but in the way of someone who now knows that mispronouncing that territory is like walking into a kitchen one night in Corner Brook and asking them to stop playing the damned fiddle so loud. I promise to do better. From now on, I will pronounce it correctly. Like this. Ahem. Labrador and the other part.
