Nanaimo Infusion Q&A — 1 DAY LEFT!

In this live YouTube Q&A, host Tod Maffin (joined by his wife Jocelyn) answers community questions about the upcoming Nanaimo Infusion event, which begins the next day. They recap a recent impromptu dinner with about 20 attendees, discuss Tod’s hectic day of six media interviews, and mention a personal eye‑doctor appointment. The bulk of the session covers practical logistics: BC Ferry boarding windows (arrive 45‑60 min before sailing, reservations optional but helpful), the BC Ferry Times app, and amenities at the Tawasun terminal (gift shop, Starbucks, playground, dog‑pee lawn). They outline the event schedule – food‑truck festival (12‑20 h) and local‑vendor market (15‑19 h) at Maffeo Sutton Park, a queer meetup (18‑20 h) at White Sails, and a community photo shoot on Saturday (drone prohibited due to federal airport zone). Red lanyards are explained as a visual identifier for attendees, sometimes granting discounts at local businesses. They promote local volunteer Dan’s free walking tours, encourage viewers to subscribe, like, and support via Super Chats, and remind the audience of Tod’s birthday on Saturday. The tone is informal, community‑focused, and slightly exhausted, with occasional humor.

Oh, Ian's going to sip for trivia.
I saw. Yeah. Oops. Oh, you guys are in here talking already. First time adulting on the Anyway, hello everybody. I don't— I assume— I hope I'm on. Let me check. Let's see. Uh-oh. Live? Yep. Oh, okay. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Let me get this going here.
All right.
Looks like— yes, excellent. Welcome. Welcome, the 7 of you. Jocelyn and I just got back from a— we did an impromptu sudden meeting of people who are here. Hi, Lisa.
It's called a dinner.
A dinner? I understand humans call that a dinner. PJ, yes, we did. We had a very nice dinner. About 20 people came, maybe 15.
It sounds like 20 to me.
Yeah, felt like about 20 people, which was lovely. Nice to meet a bunch of people who I'd talked with before. Hello, Teggs. I am exhausted. Jocelyn is the patience of a saint. That is about where we stand with things. It was very nice. There's photos at the Discord. And, and I have an eye doctor appointment first thing tomorrow morning because I might have a torn— I might have a torn retina again, which I sure hope not because that means into laser surgery right away. But— oh, Luna Cutie! Oh, okay, okay, thank you. I know, Samantha. Yeah, I'm gonna— I finished work a little early tomorrow, so I think I'm gonna have a daytime nap tomorrow. Yeah, it's just— I don't think I'd feel as tired if it weren't for the eyeball thing today. But we'll see what happens. I got a haircut, so I have to go, right? It was great to meet people, real people too, not just people on the other side of a computer screen. It was nice. And people— and like, the very first people I met were— I saw them wearing the red lanyard and I'm like, hi, I'm Tod. And they're like, yeah, we know, we know who you are. I'm like, oh yeah, right, I guess you would. And, um, and I said, you're the first people that I've met of this whole thing. And they're like, we're from South Dakota, which is amazing. And then there was South Dakota, there was a young woman from Dallas on her own who came, there are people from Michigan there, um, a couple locals came. It was great. We sat out on the pier and ate fish and chips, and it's a beautiful sunny day, so it was lovely. And man, you know why I think I'm tired? Sorry, what was I saying? Oh yeah, I did a whole bunch of media today too. I did 6 interviews today.
That's crazy.
Yeah, it's crazy. Hey Dan! I did CTV Global, As It Happens on CBC, which is probably airing right now here, uh, the Times Colonist, a couple of others that I forget. Oh, two. I did two CTVs. Oh, NNW. That was it. Thanks, Dan. That one was live. That— the one you heard on, uh, on radio was live. It kills me that it's— that they switched their frequency to 730. 730 was CKLG, LG 73. And I know that things change in the world, but damn it, you sound like an old man. I am an old man.
Go get it.
It was a great— LG 73 was like the radio station we grew up with. It was like the quintessential pop, top 40. Teenagers listened to it.
That was my radio station when I was in high school. They used to come do dances for us.
Yeah, and they would come and do dances. Everyone did LG 7— LG 73. Well, Dan, that's why they switched, right? Is it's a better signal. But it just kind of— so what's on 980? Is anything on 980? Are they simulcasting it on 980? Not to me, it's not. Um, I'm not going to be long on this live because I'm tired, so So if any of you have questions, now is the time to ask about the infusion, which starts tomorrow, which has really already started, to be honest, because people are already here and they are out in the community and they are eating in our restaurants and a couple is going to karaoke right now somewhere. So hi, Tisia! But please come Saturday morning. Metro! Oh, I'm sorry, I'm not very entertaining tonight. I am wiped out. But yeah, I'm excited by it. I was excited to meet real people. Exactly, Volker, you know what I'm talking about. Oh, good question. Yay! BC Ferries says to be there 30 to 60 minutes before scheduled sailing, and by that they mean 60 minutes, by the way. They say 30 to 60.
Earlier than or later than 30, they will not board you.
Yeah, if you're— if you're— if you come in under 30 minutes, they will not board you. So make it 60, make it an hour, um, and make sure that you have a reservation if you can get them. I understand some ferry— some of the sailings are sold out. On reservations. Yeah, Dan's right, at least an hour. So you can, you can always just drive up, right? You don't, you don't have to have a reservation. You can always just drive up and take your chances. There is a good chance that you will be on a sailing wait, and what that means is that you— is that the, the boat that is going out ahead of you, like the next boat, is full. And so you'll sit in the parking lot for 2 hours until the next sailing, and then they'll probably get you on that. I don't think they'll have a 2-sailing wait. They frequently do on like long weekends, like this past long weekend. Oh, you got it? 10:15 reservation? Good. Apple Jade, yeah, that was— I did a bunch of stuff. I have not seen any of the media about that I did today yet, which is fine. I was there, I thought. But yeah, if you're— if you got a reservation, you're good. Even with a reservation, get there no earlier than 45 minutes. Before, even with your reservation. Get there 45 minutes. There'll be a little— there's a little area for you. Are you Tawasan or are you Horseshoe Bay? Which, um— oh my God, that's really hot. Holy shit, I'm gonna unplug that. Are you leaving from Tawasan or Horseshoe Bay? Canary, Tisia, you— if, if the boat— if the sailing you want doesn't have any reservations left you can go to Tawasun. Okay, you can, um, try another sailing, uh, or just drive up, right? They always leave room for people. They don't— the whole boat isn't— they don't sell reservations to fill the boat— ship, excuse me. So you're sailing out of Tawasun. Um, Tawasun is a big terminal. It's bigger than Horseshoe Bay, so that works in your favor. Um, it's a big parking lot, and even if you're on a sailing wait, there's like a little mini mall inside the sailing area. You're both going through Towasson. Yeah. So there's a— there's— I wouldn't call it a mini mall, but there's an area. There's like an indoor gift shop. Yeah, there's a gift shop. There's a Starbucks. There's 3 or 4 food court type places. There's a chocolate store. So there's things. There's things for you to do.
You know, there's a dog pee lawn and a playground.
Yeah, there's a place for dogs to pee and stuff. So yeah, I would— oh, it's always best— do not get there any later than 30 minutes before you're sailing though, because they will gleefully give your spot away to someone like Tisia who doesn't have a res— couldn't get a reservation. She will take your spot. They will take your spot. Sorry, I don't know why I said she. I don't know what In fact, it looks like a company name, so I don't know. I asked once, I got stuck at Langdale. They reserve up to 70. Is it really that much? Wow. So in other words, there is always 30% that is available for drive-on. But, uh, there's a really good app called BC Ferry Times. Uh, it's on iPhone. They may have one— they may have one on, um on Android as well, and it's, it's, it's solid. It's good. Um, are you taking the photo on Saturday with a drone? We can't. It's against the law, sadly, where, where the park is. It's right on the water, and that is the same area— she— okay, good. And that is the same area where the seaplanes, so the floatplanes, take off and land from. And so because of that, it's a designated federal airport region, right? So You cannot fly drones at all in the park, which is unfortunate. Yeah, exactly. I reached out to someone— well, my wife actually did— who is this— bulging? That's not bulging, is it? I'm worried about my computer. No, I think we're okay. Yeah, we're okay. Um, yeah, we, we— a friend of hers is a, is a, um, like a licensed drone pilot. He was like, nope, can't do it there. Chris, thank you so much! Oh my gosh, Chris, you didn't have to do that. Thank you so much. He did one of those Super Chatty things that comes with money, which is lovely. Unnecessary but lovely. Thank you. Can't make the trip from Tacoma this weekend, but I want to send the Super Chat to support you, man. Thank you, Chris. It's exciting to see. We just went out for dinner with a bunch of people out of the blue, uh, just a couple of hours before. I was like, why don't— someone went in the Discord and said, is anyone doing anything tonight? And I thought, why don't we do something tonight? Um, and so we did. And, uh, and we went out for fish and chips on the wharf, and about 20 people came. 15 or 20 people, probably 20. Which is a good sign. It's a good sign, I think. A very long selfie stick. So the, um, Canary, the, uh, the fellow who is volunteering to do the photo, which is great, he's one of the best photographers in Nanaimo actually, um, he is bringing a ladder. That's as good as we can do. We checked with the city to see if, um, to see if they had like a scissor lift they could give us, but either they didn't or they couldn't give it to us, which I didn't expect they'd be able to. Dan, are you the same Dan that's giving the walking tours? There is a Dan that is gathering people right at the park after the photo is taken. Yes, that's the Dan. Okay, so this Dan is a— is like a hiking expert, local hiking expert, and he's gonna be giving free walking tours of Nanaimo. Of, I assume, downtown. I don't know where you're taking them, which is incredibly generous of him. And it's just wonderful to see, to see everyone come together for it. What time is the thing tomorrow evening? There's not really a thing tomorrow evening.
Wait, it's the food truck festival.
Oh, what thing? Okay, so there's, there's a few things. So I forgot about that. So tomorrow afternoon at Maffeo Sutton Park There is the food truck festival in the afternoon. There's also a market in the afternoon as well. Let me give you the times. Oops. Hang on. Okay. So the, the food truck festival is tomorrow from 12 to 8 at Maffeo Sutton Park. The market, it's local vendors, is also at Maffeo Sutton Park from 3 to 7. So basically, if you go between 3 and 7, then you will get both the food truck festival and the market at the same time. And then from 6 to 8, there's a queer meetup at White Sails, which is a pub right across the street from the park. Those are the— those are the— and then there's also other events. If you go to the website, which is— is it even on here? It's this one up here, nanaimoinfusion.ca. Do you see it? I hope I'm pointing to the right area. If you go there, you, you will be able to See, there's a link to the, to the events on the, on the Tourism Nidaiba website. But yes, I expect— well, I hope we'll have more people, um, as the, as word spreads, because it— today was the day that most of the media, um, reported it. They've been, you know, when, when it first picked up wind there was a lot of, there was a lot of media coverage, but today was crazy amount. But it's good, that's the whole goal, right? The whole goal is to, is to bring people here and, and show Americans that we're still all friends. Not with your president, don't like him so much. But with you folks we are. And also what's great is that like people from my past that I haven't been in touch with in years and years are messaging like, hey, I saw you on TV. Well, a good friend of mine just messaged me.
Me too.
And my wife as well is getting that. So it's very cool. I am tired.
Yeah.
I am tired. So I think I might— I'm just sticking around so that Dan can answer that question about the YouTube channel, and then I'm going to get offline unless there is— unless there's any questions about, about this. Where are your red lanyards? It's not required for admission, uh, it's just to show the people in town that you are here for that event. And I understand some businesses and restaurants are offering discounts if they see Red Lanyard. And also, yeah, exactly. Yeah, so that we all can see each other. And then you can also go up on the street if you see someone, say, where are you from? Like today at the little informal thing, South Dakota, Michigan, Dallas. Like, it's just wonderful. It's the first time I met people who came here for this, so it was nice to put a real It was like, oh my god, these are real people. They're not just behind a computer screen. Because up till now I've been doing everything in my house. In our house, so. I think I will sleep well tonight, PJ. I did not— I haven't—
I'm very sleepy.
Yeah, I haven't slept well the last 2 nights. And maybe because of that— Oh, our gimpy dog just tried to Come on, up, up, up. Let's go. There we go. Anyway, okay, so thank you all. I hope you're coming. If you're not, my goal is to livestream here on YouTube on this channel, so make sure you're subscribed. What do the kids say? Like and subscribe. Smash the subscribe. Smash the like button. Turn on the bell. That. Do all the things. Do all the things. Once Emperor Pumpkin Spice is out of office or thrown into the Death Star shaft by Darth Vader, we should figure out a way to make this an event all around the state of C. Agreed, agreed, Chris. Um, all right, thank you all for being— I'm sorry this is short. Um, uh, so I, I was gonna say Saturday morning just before 10, I'm gonna hand the phone to my wife and go live on this channel. And so hopefully you'll be able to see all of that stuff if you're not able to.
How many people are in this?
Um, 26.
Can I say something?
Only about 3 or 4 people are chatting though. Yeah.
Hi everyone, it's Jocelyn. I am Mrs. Tod and, um, I just wanted to remind you, Tod said, um, there's a group of food truck owners that have organized to bring out their food trucks to Maffeo Sutton Park, the big park downtown, in the evenings on Friday, Saturday, and I even think Sunday. And they're all small businesses. There's not a chain store in, in the one of them, and the market as well on Friday. And it's really important to us that they get a lot of business out of it because they're taking a chance. And so I hope you'll remember to go and enjoy and taste what the food trucks have to offer and see all the amazing art stuff that people made for the market. It's also a farmer's market, so there might be food. But, um, and that, and then Saturday at the photo. Um, thank you so much for following along, and don't forget to wish Tod a happy birthday on Saturday. Stop.
Yes, it'll be my birthday on Saturday. Um, We will be down there for Friday— tomorrow. Fuck, Friday's tomorrow. Jesus. We will be down there tomorrow between— hang on a second, we actually have, we actually have like a little schedule lined up here. Um, we will be there Friday between 4 and 6, somewhere in that range. We will be there with my mom, by the way, so All right. Thank you, Apple Jade. Thank you all for coming. I really appreciate it. Thank you, Chris, so much for the Super Chat. That was lovely. And yeah, we will see you— this is the last live except for Saturday morning. All right. Bye, guys.
Bye-bye-bye-bye.
