Pineapple Belongs On Pizza

A defense of pineapple on pizza that challenges food gatekeeping. The speaker argues the sweet-and-savory contrast works, points out Hawaiian pizza is Canadian, and mocks the outrage over unconventional toppings while sharing his own preferences: ketchup on Kraft Dinner and late-night poutine.

Real talk, people. This has to stop. Pineapple belongs on pizza, okay? And I'll explain why culturally, historically, and culinarily. First of all, if you think it's wrong, have you ever actually tasted it? Because if you have and you're still fuming, you might just hate happiness. The anti-pineapple-on-pizza camp always screams about purity, as if pizza is some sacred ancient Italian artifact, sacred and untouched. Have these people seen a pizza menu lately? Like, there's pizza with mac and cheese on it. Boston Pizza has one that's crust and pierogies. That's literally dough on dough. But pineapple? That's the line? That's the culinary apocalypse? What, now we're gonna gatekeep what, spaghetti too? Sorry, unless your grandmother stomped tomatoes barefoot in Sicily, you're not allowed to eat it. Listen, pizza is salty and rich and cheesy, bready goodness. Pineapple is sweet and tangy and juicy and a little acidic. That's what chefs, real ones, not your Uncle Dave with the smoker, that's what chefs call balance. It's contrast. It's what makes your taste buds throw a party. Sweet and savoury together, that's not blasphemy, that's innovation. Canadian innovation, by the way. That's right, you heard me. Hawaiian pizza was invented in Ontario by a Greek immigrant in a little small-town restaurant, which means that hating on pineapple pizza isn't just bad taste, it's practically unpatriotic. You might as well boo the anthem and slap a beaver. Listen, we've all lowered the bar. But somehow the moment fruit gets involved, it's a scandal. Where was this energy when someone put ranch dressing on their slice? Where's the outrage over cauliflower crust? No, it's pineapple catching all the heat. So yeah, I'm a pineapple person, okay? I'm also a person who believes that ketchup belongs on Kraft Dinner, and who knows that the best poutine is eaten out of a paper tray at 2 in the morning in a parking lot while trying not to cry. In other words, I have taste.
