Tod Maffin argues that political forces profit from stoking fear between Canadians and Americans over trade disputes. He recalls a successful community photo event in Nanaimo showing ordinary people can stay friends despite the rhetoric, and proposes a one-day action to push back against Project 2025.

The loudest forces right now are making money by keeping Canadians and Americans afraid of each other, angry at each other. Politicians are using the trade dispute as a weapon, turning people on opposite sides of the border into villains. When Jocelyn and I held the Nanaimo infusion event last year, we invited Americans to come just take a family photo with us. Hundreds showed up. That friendship never disappeared. Regular people trying to raise kids and pay rent and keep food on the table. It didn't vanish because a few leaders or jackasses in Facebook groups said it should. So I have an idea. Instead of letting politicians pit us against each other, we do the opposite. On one day. For just one town. Now, there are quite a few details for this. So I will lay out exactly how it'll work in my newsletter this Saturday. It's free. You can join the newsletter at newsletter.todmaffin.com. That's a website, not an email address. If you're in, you will be part of the first group. Look, Project 2025 took something away from all of us. Next week, we start taking it back.
