Thank you! Here's the magic trick I promised.

Magician Tod Maffin thanks supporters of his recovery and promotes a June 21 charity walk for Edgewood Treatment Centre, which funds addiction treatment scholarships. He then teaches two magic trick apps: Mental Killer uses phone calls to reveal chosen cards, and iForce uses phone motion to guess spectators' numbers or words.

Hi, first of all, thank you so much for donating. I really do appreciate it. You know, this place, Edgewood, in Nanaimo, this treatment center, costs a lot of money. It cost me about $25,000. We had to mortgage our house to attend this, and we were really lucky because I actually— we had that money, barely. It costs a lot of money to recover from addiction, and there's a lot of people who want, desperately want treatment, and just cannot get it. They can't afford it. And so this walk that I'm doing on June 21st in Nanaimo, which you're welcome to come and watch, it's in the evening, goes to the Edgewood Foundation. It's a charity foundation that the treatment center has. And what they do basically is they sponsor, they scholarship essentially people who cannot afford to get treatment, to get them well. Treatment saved my life. It really, really did. They only accept people in Edgewood who are close to death. There's 4 phases of addiction. The last phase of the 4 phases, charmingly known as the terminal phase, that's really the only way that they'll accept you. So I was probably a couple of weeks or months away from dying. So this is certainly a thank you for donating, and thank you for supporting all the people who are going to be needing it in the future who can't afford it. They're going to get better, and it's going to save their lives, and you're going to be a part of that. So thank you so much. Now, before I start to cry, here's the video. This is an amazing magic trick. It requires an app. I'm going to show all the information on the bottom of the screen and also on this webpage that you're viewing this video on as well. We'll have a link to it. The app costs some money. I think it's $5, or it might be $8 or something like that. Believe me, it is well, well worth it. I'm also going to show you an app, another magic video or another magic trick. So you're getting bonus. You're getting 2 for 1. So here's how this works. First, I'm going to do what magicians do, which is I'm going to show you the illusion first, and then I'm going to show you how it works.
Okay?
So here's the illusion. So you're out for dinner or drinks or whatever, and you say to your friend, "Listen, I'm going to do this trick for you." And your friend says, "Okay, whatever." Now, before you start, pull out— if you can think about this ahead of time and have a card with your assistant's name on it. It can be your friend. It doesn't really matter. Don't worry. It's not a real person. You're not really going to be phoning them. This is what mine looks like. I don't actually carry a card with me. Some people who do this trick have it printed and they say, "This is my assistant's phone number." I just usually write down Sam and then Sam's phone number. Okay? So you say to someone, think of any card, any playing card whatsoever, and they say whatever, you know, okay. And you say, now tell me what the card is and I'm going to prove to you, this is going to blow your mind, I'm going to prove to you that I knew ahead of time what this card was. And they'll be like, okay. So they'll tell you the card. So let's say that they say it is the 4 of Diamonds. Okay? So then you grab your phone and you open up the dialer app, alright? And you dial Sam's number. Now remember, you put this out on the table first, right? So they've seen it all the way around. So it's 604-224-0704. So I'm gonna dial this here, okay? Watch. So— ah, for God's sake, sorry. It's hard to do this. Oh, we say 4 of diamonds, right? So 224-0704. Okay, so there's the number. It matches the number of Sam or whoever you decide to call. And now call. Now, usually it's best to put this on speakerphone, right? So it's gonna ring, and after it rings a couple of times, you can say, you know, um, Listen, if Sam's not there, just listen to her voicemail.
Sorry, I missed your call. Feel free to leave a message. Oh, if you're calling about the card, it should be the 4 of Diamonds.
What the hell? Isn't that amazing? This trick works flawlessly no matter what card they pick. Okay, let's do another one. Let's do the 8 of Clubs. Okay? So we'll call Sam's number again. 604. The 224, sorry, it's hard to dial. So 224-0704. Call. Speakerphone. Now usually I just say, listen, when Sam picks up the phone, just tell her what your card was. Okay? 8 of clubs. Listen again. Remember, same number. Same number.
Sorry, I missed your call. Feel free to leave a message. Oh, if you're calling about the card, it should be the 8 of clubs.
What? Isn't that amazing? This works for every card. It works flawlessly every single time. You can even repeat it for someone else, right? Because it— oh, sorry. So if someone says, uh, oh, come on, do it to my buddy here, it works flawlessly. All right, here's how this trick works. First of all, you're not using your regular dialer. I know it looks like the regular dialer, but it's actually not. It's actually a fake dialer. It's actually an app. Okay? So you've got to load it up on your phone first. No one will know you're doing this. You can load it up 10 minutes before you even do the trick, so no one will even spot it. It is an identical replica of the dialer on the iPhone. Oh, by the way, if you— if they don't have an Android app, the video that I'm going to show you— I'm or the next Magic Chip has an Android function as well, so don't worry, you're not getting ripped off. The only difference between the dialer on the iPhone or your phone and the dialer on this app is if you look really, really carefully, I know it's kind of blurry, this little thing here, this little there, it actually says MK, MK, which we'll get to in a second. The real phone dialer, if you look at it, It's just an X. Okay? So I'm going to show you the— that one. See? Not an X. It says MK. This one, it's an X. That's how you can tell the difference between whether you're on the app or not. Honestly, no— I've done this hundreds of times. Nobody has seen that tiny little difference. Okay? So you download the app. The app is on the App Store and it is called Mental Killer. That's what the MK stands for, Mental Killer. When you set it up, I'm not going to walk you through the whole setup screen. When you set it up, it basically wants to know what your local area code is. In my case, it's 604. You give it 604. That's it. Now it's locked in your phone. The trick is done. All you have to do is— the rest is just performance. Here's what you do is you get— you can pick any name. Here's another little trick. It can be any phone number as long as it's the area code that you put into the app. In this case, 604. You can put any number. So you can put 604-1234567. Don't do that because they'll know it's a trick. You can put any number you want after 604. So then they say— so then you've loaded it up, right, on your phone. And then they say— you say to them, "Pick any card." And they say, "Okay, let's say—" let me give you another one I haven't done. Let's say the 5 of spades. Okay? So here's what you do. You pull the phone. You don't let them see what you're doing for the first 3 digits because what you're actually doing, even though it— Did you hear that? It sounds like I did 604, and it looks like I did 604. And in fact, even if I punch in the digits, you'll see 604. But watch, I'm not actually pushing 604. They picked 5 of clubs, so you punch into the phone 05 and then the letter C, which in this case is the number 2. You know how they've got letters underneath the numbers? So if it were the 2 of diamonds, you do 02D, which is 023. If it is the 9 of hearts, you do 09H, which is 094. The app will walk you through what to do with face cards. It's actually also really easy. So let's do an example. Let's do 6 of diamonds, right? So now don't let them see you punch in the first 3 digits. You remember, if you saw me at the beginning of this video, I showed this to you and then I went, "Hang on a second," and then I let you see after I did the first 3. So 6 of diamonds, Now I'm gonna punch in 063, which is the D, okay? But watch what the screen does, just in case they catch it, okay? Oh, 6, D. So you punch in the right— their card, and it will put 604. It doesn't matter what digits you push, it will respond with 604 so that when you do turn it around to them, or you let them just kind of— I don't usually go, "See!" I usually just let them kind of see. After I've punched it in, I let them kind of just see like this, and then I punch in the rest of the phone number, which is Sam's phone number. Again, it doesn't matter what you punch in after this because the trick is done. Okay? So, um, phone. Right? So by punching in the 06D or whatever your card sequence is, that tells the app what it is, what to say when she answers the phone. You don't have to be on— excuse me— you don't have to be on speakerphone. You can have them listen if you want. I just did it that way. So, and then it's just that. Then you just say, you know, so, hey, listen, press call. I'll put it on speakerphone. I do this to my assistant Sam all the time. She's used to it. Once you pick up the phone, just say, what was my card? Don't worry, she'll be okay with it. And you wait a little bit. You say, if it goes to her voicemail, just keep listening through the voicemail.
Sorry, I missed your call. Feel free to leave a message. Oh, if you're calling about the card, it should be the 6 of diamonds.
What? It works flawlessly every time. So it takes a— for the face cards, you know, you have to remember that Jack is 10, Queen is 11, King is 12, and things like that. You can also pick the voice that you can use. You can have a male or a female voice. The reason, by the way, that you put this in front of them to begin with is that after you do the trick, some jackass is gonna say, "Well, there's 52 different phone numbers. It's like some service that you've got, or it's some, you know, there's like 52 phone numbers, and depending on what card I tell you—" No. You don't, because it's like, no, it's not 52 numbers, because I had this phone number in front of you before you even told me what the card was. "Hallelujah!" Huh? I know! So it's called Mental Killer. This will blow your friends away. Here's another— here's the bonus trick that I gave for you, that I've got for you guys, and it is in the event that you have an Android phone, because I don't think Mental Kill is available for the Android. I might be wrong about that, but just in case it's not, so you don't feel ripped off, iForce is a great, great app, okay? So here's what it looks like. It's actually even easier to do. To do. So it basically, it looks like a regular— I'm just going to clear this here, one second. Let me just make sure that I've got this set up correctly.
Oops, sorry.
Make sure I've got this. What have I done wrong? Okay. All right. So it looks like a regular app that's called Doodle. See the one in the center there, Doodle? Oops, sorry, wrong one. Doodle, like this. Do not search in the App Store for the app called Doodle. That's a Trojan horse. It's a dummy app so that when people try to figure out how the trick is done, they're just going to download the dummy app that doesn't actually do what they want it to do. The app you're looking for is called iForce, I-F-O-R-C-E. When you launch it for the first time, it's going to walk you through how this works, but it's very clever. You basically say to it— come on, now it's giving me difficulties here.
Come on.
Anyway, there we go. Okay. So, when it launches, the way this trick works is you go like this. You say, it's going to be hard for me to show because it needs to be put on the table. You basically, when it launches, it looks like a doodle app. It looks like, you know, you draw pictures and things like that on it. In fact, it actually is too. Watch. You know, you can set the color down here to blue and you can draw on it. And then you can do this. And it is genuinely a doodle app. And if you go to the app called Doodle, or your friends do trying to figure out how this trick works, they will get the doodle app. They will get the app that doesn't actually do a magic trick, but just lets them doodle. So it'll frustrate the hell out of them because they'll be trying to do it with this app. So the app itself, which is called iForce, is very clever in that when you download it, it's called iForce. And it will walk you through the instructions one time. So make sure you're in a place to watch the instructions. After it shows you how the trick works, it— I don't know how it does this technically— it kinda self-destructs the app and it renames itself to Doodle. So for all intents and purposes, it looks just like this Doodle app that they'll be able to find on the store, which doesn't really do anything except it's genuinely Doodle. Here's what iForce does, okay? This is the trick version. It will let you— you basically say, "Pick a number from—" You put the phone face down on the ground. I can't do it for you here, but you put it face down on the table and you say, "Pick a number from 1 to 8," or you can say, "What's your favorite kind of food?" or "Pick a color." There's a variety of things that it could do. Let's just say, "Pick a number from 1 to 8," right? You show them the screen and you show them that the screen is blank on the screen, that the Doodle screen is blank. You put the phone down and you say, "Pick a number from 1 to 8." ?" They say, "Whatever," because it's a trick. It doesn't really matter what they say. It's still going to work. Let's say they say, "4," and you turn the phone over, and on the screen, it says 4. It's a drawing that says 4. You flip it over again. You say, "Clear it. We'll do this again. Pick another number." They say, "8," and you flip it over, and it says 8. It doesn't matter what number they pick. When you flip it over, that number's going to be there. It has nothing to do with camera. It has nothing to do— it doesn't listen to the voice. It doesn't listen to the audio and hear them say that. Some people with the mental killer, the one with the card trick that I showed you with the dialing of the phone, Some people will say, if they don't say, "Well, there's 52 phone numbers," which is why you solve it with that, sometimes they'll say, "Oh, you, obviously it recorded me telling you what the card was." So then you say to them, "Okay, write it down or mouth it to me or tell him and have them say it to me in Spanish." It doesn't really matter because it has nothing to do with the audio. So again, you say, "Pick a number from 1 to 8." They pick 2. Turn it over. The 2 is there. Here's how the trick works. It will draw it on the screen for you depending on how you turn the phone over. There's 4 directions you can turn a phone over, right? You can turn a phone over that way from the table, or you can turn the phone over the reverse way. You can turn it over like that. See what I mean? Or you can turn it over where it pivots on the bottom. You say, OK, I'll turn it over. And fwoop, you turn it over like that. Or you can turn it over where it pivots on the top. You say, OK, I'll turn it over like that. So there's 4 positions that it can be turned over. Now you're getting it, right? The gyrometer in here, whatever, the accelerometer, watches for which direction you pick up the phone. Okay, 1 of 4 ways. That's 1 to 4. You may be saying, well, that's just 4 numbers. I thought it could do 8. It can. And the way it differentiates between them is the speed. So if you turn it over this way slowly, it will draw number 1. If you turn it over the same way fast, wham, like that, it'll draw number 5. Or whatever it is. It'll actually show you the very first time the screen, it will show you what the sequences are. So there's 1 to 4, there's 1 to 8. You can do heads or tails, you can do arrows, you can customize it. So if you have a, you know, if you do it for business, you can say, I don't know, you can say, pick the name of our vice president, you know, tell me the name of vice president, and it'll draw the name or draw a picture of them. So you can customize it. So we'll just do 1 to 8 because that's the relatively easy one. And then, here, watch. So again, the screen is blank. I'm just going to do it here. So blank screen, right? So we'll pretend that I'm going to put it down. And watch, I'm going to turn it over now. Whoop! And look, it draws a number. So you have to learn the sequence. You have to learn it. And to do that, if you want to get this little cheat sheet back again, you drag with 2 fingers down the top. And there it is. Sometimes it'll give you the cheats. Obviously, don't do this in front of them because they'll see what the cheats are. And to get the hints, if you just click the blue arrows beside the ones you want, it'll show you how to turn it over. So 1 and 2 is from the top. 1 is fast and the other is slow. You'll see a tortoise and a hare. It'll make sense once you do it. You know, you can do foods as well. So I'm going to go— again, remember it's blank. Oh, did you see it? It just popped in there. So you've got to make sure you— so if it's blank and they say— and you say, what's your favorite food? And they say Thai food. Then you turn it over slowly and it's Thai. Now, if you caught it really quickly there, you actually saw it flash up on the screen. So, you know, kind of COVID it or do it slow or make sure that they don't see that kind of thing. You know, it just did Mexican because I did it the other way. I don't know what this one is. That's sushi. I don't know what that one is. That's Indian. So you get the idea. It's a fun app to play with. That app is called iForce on the App Store. It's also on Android. Remember— and then also, the great thing is when you shut the app down, It just says "Doodle." And so if they're really, really— this is the best part about this app, is that they're going to go to the App Store, right? Because they're going to be like, "How the hell did they do that trick?" So they're going to go to the App Store and they're not going to know it's called iForce, right? Nowhere on it does it say iForce except the first time you download it. So it says— so it'll say "Doodle." If they just go to the the App Store to try to download it, they'll find Doodle. And they'll be like, aha! I found it. It's Doodle. Here it is. I'll do it. And they will be turning it over as many times. And it does nothing. It is exactly the same app, though, right? It is genuinely the drawing app that's in the iForce thing. It's just it doesn't have any of the magic parts. So you'll be able to watch them download the Doodle app, which is free. Again, that's why it's a Trojan horse, right? It's meant to capture them, catch them. And I've seen people play with it for hours, like flip it over, Flip it over slow, and it will never work for them because they don't have the real one. So that's it. Here's some glitter for you, because it's magic. The glitter is optional. Well, that was a lot of glitter. The glitter is optional. You don't need it to do the tricks. And once again, I hope you have fun with the tricks, and thank you so much. Thank you so much for supporting me in this walk on June 21st. I really appreciate it, and it's going to help some people. It really is. So thank you, and Bye! Hope you had fun with it. Don't tell this secret to anyone. You're now under the Magician's Code, remember? Okay? Bye!
