Tod Maffin is live!

Tod Maffin and a co-host recap a Nanaimo community market that drew 400-500 people. Volunteers ran an "Adopt an American" table where locals signed up to offer support, with emotional exchanges that reminded them of Come From Away. They also discuss logistics and share musical theatre recommendations.

Totally.
Oh yeah, it's going well though. Yeah, I think it is going well. It's more people than I thought, which is good.
Well, and like half the city came out to eat, I think. Yeah, and the market people are happy.
Yeah, I just didn't want them— I didn't want the market people and the food truck people to be like, so I thought you said there'd be people here.
Well, the food truck people are thrilled. Yeah, I think the market people— I don't know if they— it was the best location, but the market organizer thought it was amazing. That's good.
So I'm super glad. Hello people, we are— we have left the building. That's my friend Kelly back there.
Um, Did you see the lady who thought you were so cute? You were even cuter in person.
Oh my God, bitch, somebody said that.
So cute. I'm like, yeah, he is. Back off, lady.
Back off, lady. Um, hello, Leah. Hello, everyone. We are, uh, there's Jocelyn is driving. Driving. So if this abruptly stops, then you know what's going on. But, um, yeah, so the first night is done mostly. There's still a couple of little things happening. Um, it was— there were a lot of people there, which I'm really glad for. We were just talking about this before I went live, that I was very nervous that people would not show up, and that I asked the food truck people and the market people to come and no one came. But like, I, I think at like Like, if you— I think that there was about— never get to the— yeah, you're not wrong, Fiona. Like, I think that there were 200 people there at each time, at each window, which meant that people come in and out, like, maybe 400 or 500. A lot. There were a lot.
And like, when we first got there to win—
well, just not just when we were there, but just like during the event. I'm sure there— I'm sure it was 500 during the event, 400 or 500 anyway.
So, and that was, you know, partly like the Naimoans, but I think a lot, a lot of red lanyards.
There were the cutest— say hi, Tanya! Um, the cutest thing is this, um, they made— there's a couple of volunteers, everyone was volunteers obviously, but there were a couple of people from our neighborhood who really wanted to volunteer And I really didn't want to organize volunteers, um, so I said, do, do whatever you like, whatever you want is fine with me. This is not, you know, this is the city's event, not mine as far as I'm concerned. So they came out, they made a little table, like an information table, and they had a sign on it. I think if you were on the live earlier I did, I showed you guys the sign said Adopt an American. And people had— locals were writing down on index cards, they're like the locals, their own phone numbers and, you know, text me and what they wanted to do. So it's like, I like hiking, I I like this. And then they ran out of Americans because there were, there were more people in Nanaimo. Do you know what it kind of reminded me of? I mean, not nearly to this scale, obviously, but it sort of reminded me of Come From Away, the plot to Come From Away. Yeah, you know, where like a community turns out to help a whole bunch of Americans. These Americans didn't need help, but like, I think a lot of them needed a fucking hug.
Needed a hug. They needed a hug from several people that they were like, it was so stressful back home. I just needed to get away.
Yeah, I heard that from a lot of people too. So yeah, and we are off to a, to a little meetup with some friends, and, uh, we're gonna find Kelly a man.
She's hot and she's a nurse.
She's a nurse and she's hot.
She's got filthy mouth.
Look at that rack.
Goddamn, dude, keep it PG, um, for now. Thank you, Leah.
We need help. Hugs, exactly. Yeah, I know, I know. It's, um, there were a lot of hugs. I always ask people if I can hug them because, you know, it's— consent is important and some people don't like being touched, which I totally understand. So I always say, are you a hugger? And they're strangers, right? So I always, so I always like say, are you a hug— are you a hugging person? Do you like to hug? Every single person was like, oh my God, yes, please give me a hug. There were people that came from Florida that we met, and Utah, and Texas. Excuse me. And I forgot to rent a bullhorn, by the way, and our photographer reminded me, and I don't have a bullhorn, so we're just gonna have to yell.
Oh no.
He wants us to try and find a parking spot for him in the morning, and I don't know how that's gonna be possible. Fiona, I love musicals too. Fiona, have you seen Legally Blonde the musical? People make fun of me for this, but Legally Blonde is one of the top 3 musicals of all time. I'm not kidding. I'm saying this with a straight face because I believe it, not because it's a joke. It is such a good— I take it back, top 5, top 5. It's such a good show. I wasn't— that's not a bad idea, you know, a cardboard board, a Cardboard, like cardboard and a funnel, just make it into a little mini. That would actually work. It would work a little better than me yelling. I'm already losing my voice.
It doesn't work as well as you think it will.
No.
Um, I'm trying to think of how—
You know what happened with the bullhorn is he said get— he said make sure you have a bullhorn and I thought he was talking— in my head I thought that he was talking about get a bullhorn for the mayor is going to make some comments in the MLA and then when the city said—
I mean for the portrait, for the photo.
That's what he wants it for. But then when the city said we're bringing a sound system for you, I thought, oh, I don't need the bullhorn anymore. When I in fact did.
Fiona! It depends on how it works. Maybe they can use that sound system. Maybe if it's wireless, he can hold on to it.
Oh, maybe. Yeah, we might be able to drag it over or something. Fiona, it's on YouTube. It's on YouTube. Someone ripped it or something. Someone pirated it. So MTV years ago did a special and they went to Broadway and they— sorry, sorry, sorry— and they went to Broadway and they shot, they shot it as a special. So kind of like, you know, like Hamilton is on Disney Plus or Come From Away is on Apple Plus. It was like that. So, um, so just go to YouTube and type in Legally Blonde. The one you want is, is the MTV one, and it'll be clear. You start playing, it'll be like the opening. Look at fucking hair.
It's gorgeous.
It's crazy. Yeah, it's so good, dude. It's so good, Fiona. It's like, it's catchy, it's fun, it's emotional. They do it— they do a Riverdance take up in the middle of it randomly. It's really good. Yeah, we saw Come From— oh, you must have seen it when it was in Vancouver, eh? I keep getting— keep wanting to get my mom— it was good. Yeah, I It was good. I thought— someone said, someone said prepare to cry, you're gonna cry. Um, I did not cry.
From Away, I cried a little bit.
Did you?
Not, not like a lot.
I'm, I'm very judgy about musical theater.
I thought it was really good, but it wasn't like my favorite, but it was good.
And plays as well. Um, yeah, I have a story to tell, but my mom might be watching, so I won't tell that story.
Wouldn't be watching a YouTube livestream.
Maybe.
I don't know.
I don't know.
Probably having a chat with her friend. They're not staying with us, are they?
No, not that I'm aware.
Oh God.
Uh, okay, well I guess that ends the live cuz, uh, one of my best friends apparently is coming coming over. I knew that he was in town for the weekend. I just didn't think that they wanted— no, no, they wanted to park their thing outside our house, remember? Okay, I think that's all he's talking about.
Sure. Yeah, how— what? Oh, oh, I remember. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, did it— oh no, it did the stupid thing again. Fucking— I hate—
who needs to message him anyway?
Sorry, what, what happened was the phone connected to the CarPlay connected to the phone, blah blah blah. I don't really know how that works. All right, I'm gonna get off the live. Tomorrow morning at 10, probably just before 10, we will go live on this channel and you will be able to see the mayor say a couple of nice words. I will probably say a couple of words. The MLA will say some words. And, um, and we'll see how many people come. And then we're taking the big picture. So thanks everybody. I will see you on here tomorrow morning.
