An American doctor compares Canada's healthcare system to the VA, praising its lack of prior authorizations and simplified billing. Doctors submit claims through a mobile app and get paid directly by the province within 15 to 30 days, cutting administrative work so they can focus on patients.
What do you think of the Canadian healthcare system as a whole?
What I would say is that if you've worked in a VA healthcare system in the United States, you kind of know what working in the Canadian healthcare system is. And there are a lot of pluses and minuses to that. So there's not a lot of pre-approvals. There's no pre-approvals. You don't have to get prior authorizations for anything. You don't have to call and ask permission to do a procedure or whatever else. That's it. Billing is extraordinarily simplified and very, very easy. So those types of administrative burdens are absent, basically. I bill using an app. See a patient, I enter in their information, and then I enter my bill and it goes off. It's extraordinarily simple. Somewhere between 15 and 30 days later, I get paid for it by the province, directly deposited into my account.
And they're no hassle.
It's really quite amazing. None of my time is spent fighting with an insurance company. I do spend a lot of time with my patients. I am just spending less time on dealing with insurance companies, rejections, and things like that. That has been a huge, huge relief.
