LaToya Kelly argues against using conditioners, whether leave-in or wash-out, because they leave a film that weighs hair down and makes it look smoky when straightened. She recommends applying oil or shine after heat styling instead, and says her clients preferred the feather-light feel of hair without any conditioner.

Unpopular opinion: I hate conditioner. I don't like leave-in conditioners, wash-out conditioners. They add a film over your hair so that when you straighten it, it is smoky, and I don't like it. I get this result out of no conditioner. Even when I was in hair school, all of my clients, when I would style their hair, they loved it because there was no weight on it. It felt like a feather. It felt beautiful. It felt natural. It felt pretty. And I did not have to use any conditioner. Any oil that you need or any shine that you need, I can apply at the end, but I do not think you should be putting heat on top of product. And a lot of people don't completely wash out conditioner that needs to be washed out, and the leave-in conditioner is definitely leaving a film. So drop a comment, let me know what you think. I know this is a very unpopular opinion.
