How to Defend the Takedown (Diverting your Opponent) - Grappling & Ground Fight

Master Wong demonstrates a takedown defense by dropping your base, twisting your torso, and redirecting your opponent's forward pressure. Pin their shoulder, grab their hand, and twist to off-balance them. The mechanics mirror Tai Chi and Wing Chun movements.

What's up guys, welcome back to another lesson in the Master Wong Grappling and Ground Fight System. In today's lesson we're going to be talking about how to divert your opponent again, but in a different manner. So you may have gone for the sprawl and perhaps he gets this leg so you didn't have enough time to obviously move it away. So before, you're looking to drop that hand in, maybe get some crossface and spread the leg before the change. This time, perhaps he gets in and he gets this leg and is trying to apply pressure. Now instead, you're going to drop, drop your base even lower, twist, and obviously take his pressure. So his momentum is trying to drive into you, you're going to turn it away, just as before with the rear hand. But now this is how you're going to use your whole body. So if I can borrow you please, Naz. So same kind of thing as before. Now I may shoot, he drops in, so I've gone for the punch maybe, pull her up, maybe here, he's in. So I'm looking for this hand. I've either got to block him here or it's got to come inside like before. Now because he's gotten so deep, it's likely he's going to manage to take my front leg. So I'm here, boom, if he's got this leg, pull. So if I give him time, this leg's now off, he twists. I'm off balance. So the first thing I must do once this hand is in, my leg actually from here, once I go, spreads slightly. So I push it out with the hand. If I leave it here, it doesn't take much to be pulled off balance. So I'm here, my leg is now pointing out here. So if he pulls against it, it's much harder. It doesn't mean he can't it's just going to be hard. My shoulder remains pinned against him, I keep good posture through the spine, and I take hold of this. So I would look for this, take hold with this hand, and as he continues to drive, I just twist. So my weight went from here, I'll obviously take his leg, come out of the way, and I divert across. So that's all I do, twist with the shoulder, takes him off balance. So you'll see this in, for instance, Tai Chi or Wing Chun with the knife stuff, the butterfly knife. These are various positions that you have to use, so you might as well utilise them in the grappling too. There's no point having one method for one style of training and a completely different method when doing other training. So I'm here. So that's nice and slow. Show you once more slowly. I'll go this side. So I'm up here, my hand is in still. Now if I've gotten it outside, it's going to be harder. So ideally I want it here. That way I can obviously grab the other hand, pull, and twist. So what to do if I get the hand wrong? So if I show you from this side, you'll see better. So if I go here, now my hand is outside his hand, so I only have this one. What I have to do is bring this hand with this one up and across his face at the same time. So he drops in My hand went too wide and I twist. So now I've had to do that same body movement, but the hand is slightly different. So from this side, I've gone here, so I pull on his leg towards me. This turns up and away across his face here, which obviously puts him straight in line. You've then got the choice now to shoot here, so I can either follow up, go in and fight on the ground with him, or of course I could run away and make my escape if I didn't really want to fight. So once more, turn, next, come back, once more, Like so. So it's pretty simple. Thank you. Pretty simple movement in the respect you're only going from here to here. You just need to catch his energy soon enough to allow you to divert. If it's too late, you'll likely end up on the floor because you'll have this lead leg pulled away from you. So make sure you practice hard and just concentrate. Move as he moves. This leg goes forward slightly. Bam! Catch, turn. Or obviously you'll go in, the hand is wider maybe, pull the leg and up across the face. Achieves the same thing, but obviously the two methods are slightly different. But ultimately your body movement is identical. Whether I go here or here, my torso, hips, feet, etc. had to do the same thing. Practice hard, guys. See you next lesson.
