Is it supposed to be this f*cking difficult?

Tyrone Bray breaks down why self-improvement feels so hard: internal resistance from habits, external resistance from people around you, and environments that don't support change. He argues difficulty is necessary for adult responsibility, and that simplifying the process makes it sustainable.

Hey people, what's up? So tonight we're going to be talking about, is it supposed to be this fucking difficult? Now, as you can see, we've got some new scenery tonight, not in my office as I normally would be, because I've actually just been to the cinema. So as I realized, oh shit, I haven't done my live, I figured I'd jump on here now in the car. So difficulty. Now, of course, when it comes to trying to improve anything in our lives, there is likely to be some level of difficulty or challenge. And that's of course because change is required, and change quite often is difficult because we get set in our ways and we have shit going on that's difficult to change. And often there is actually a part of us that doesn't want to change, let alone actually transform like we need to in the long run in order to make that change sustain. But with this idea of change and it being so difficult and often feeling so stressful, I want you to consider that perhaps the difficulty is necessary. Now, it's not enjoyable necessarily, and it's not necessarily something we go out looking for, or at least we shouldn't. Sometimes we do because of the virtue in the struggle, but that's another story for a different video. But we don't necessarily go out looking for the difficulty or trying to deliberately make life hard, but trying to improve our lives, whether in body, being, balance, or business it's often a challenge, you know. And it's not only the fact that we struggle to change for ourselves because we're set in our ways. Often the people around us are set in their ways in relation to us as well. So they will often subconsciously hold us back, hinder us, and prevent us being able to move forward. Then we have our environment. If our environment isn't set up in a way to support the changes that we're trying to make, again, we end up with the same problem. There's this desire to change but an inability to do it because the environment doesn't support the desire. So unfortunately, we end up getting stuck quite often in the struggle. And then, like I say, we get to this point and we're just like, for fuck's sake, does it really have to be this difficult? Now, as I mentioned, I want you to consider that maybe it's a necessary part of the process. Now, what I mean by this is perhaps the difficulty is actually your rite of passage into not only the, the right to maintain or keep the result that you're after, but also your rite of passage into adulthood. Now that might sound a bit like, you, you, what, mate, I'm already a fucking adult, I'm 40 years old, I've got kids, I've got a wife, and so on. Like, I'm an adult, what the hell are you talking about? Now I'm not, not talking about necessarily in your chronological age, but in terms of your being, how you're showing up, how you act on a daily basis. Now, if you think about it, many of us, we get stuck and we're trying to reach our goals and so on. And then I come along and I go, oh well, maybe part of the difficulty is your rite of passage into adulthood. And you're like, you what? But many of us get up and we have cereal for breakfast, then we have fucking sandwiches for lunch, and then we have whatever our wife or mum cooks us for dinner in the evening, and then we expect to get results, or we hope to get results. And eating cereal for breakfast isn't a way to be healthy or to get lean or to get the results that we want. And of course, then eating sandwiches or fucking pasta salads every single day and stuff isn't a way to, to stay healthy either. So along with this idea of, oh, it's our rite of passage into adulthood, it's actually us developing the ability to take ruthless responsibility of self. Now, the reason there's a struggle is because there is a big win on the other side of it. It's not necessarily just the case of, oh, losing weight, or, oh, now I've got a body that looks better and I feel a bit more confident on the beach. We're also looking at and considering the fact that I'm actually stepping into a new sense of being, a new way of being. I'm actually transforming who I've been so that I can actually achieve more in life. So yes, we're looking to transform our body so we're more comfortable and so we have more confidence and self-esteem and so on, but it's also giving you the ability to transform and elevate your relationship. Because if you have a better relationship with yourself where you show yourself greater discipline, greater self-respect, it will automatically command more respect from your partner, from your friends, from your colleagues and and so on, because it's like, oh, holy shit, this is somebody that looks after themselves. They show up for themselves. They have self-respect. And therefore, that automatically gives you the right, or gives them a sense of, hmm, I should treat this person with more respect. Now, of course, doesn't always happen. You get some people that would disrespect you regardless. But it's much easier to disrespect somebody who clearly disrespects themselves than it is to disrespect someone who clearly shows up and looks after themselves. Somebody knows what they're doing, somebody that's certain in their sense of self, and somebody that basically isn't going to take that kind of shit because we clearly see it in the way they show up for them. So it's not, as I say, just a case of, oh well, you know, I eat better now because I want a better body. And it's not a case of, well, it's difficult just because it's difficult. Maybe, as I say, this process is supposed to build you into something else, somebody else that can achieve more than what you currently have. We don't just want a body because we want to look good. Of course, that's a great aspect, but it's because we want more from life and we understand that at a base level that if we are falling apart, it's going to be much harder for us to hold down decent relationships. It's going to be much harder for us to show up in our business or our profession at a high level and to operate daily at the highest level possible so that we can accelerate and elevate the game of business and making money, keeping money, growing money, and so on. And then, of course, it's the case of, well, if within my being I have a sense of purpose and a sense of direction or a goal or a target I'm aiming for, the better I take care of myself, the more likely I am to be able to chase that thing down without it burning me out. Because that's the catch that many of us have. It's like we, we get set on these ideas and all these different things outside of us that we want to do and we want to achieve and we want to, to be successful with. But quite often what happens is we show up for those things at such a high level relative to the level that we're not showing up for ourselves. Because, you know, we're not important in this grand scheme of things. We're always at the bottom of our own to-do list. So we show up so well for these other things that we leave very little for itself. So we're getting worn out, tired, broken down. So then whenever we do try to do anything, it feels even harder than it really is because we're already worn out, tired, and broken down, which of course then just compounds the issue. So we need to learn how to take at least some of that back to give to us. And that doesn't mean it's going to be easy because it is a difficult process. But as I say, this process is building you into a new version of you. It's building you into something and someone else that's able and capable to achieve more in all areas of life, not just in your body. That's the foundation, that's the vessel that we get to move around in on a day-to-day basis. It's our vehicle for life and achieving all the other things that we want across those other domains. But it's not just about that, it's about expanding and elevating life across the board, which is why I always talk about the idea of, or the fact that we need to be stronger than life. Because many of us are actually struggling to achieve the things that we want in our body because the rest of our life is getting in the way. The rest of our life is kicking our ass and leaving very little energy, very little capacity, very little will or desire to show up and do anything for us, even though we know that that's what we need to do. It's like, oh shit, I know I need to do this thing, but I'm just— I'm fucking exhausted. I'm so tired and I'm so fed up of the obligation of having to do more and to do this and to show up and to eat better and to move and exercise and all these different things. We get so pissed off with the obligation that again, it makes it feel even more challenging, which is why at some point we have to actually go, you know what, maybe it's time to simplify this game. Maybe it's time to simplify in order to multiply, because making it so complex and so difficult isn't actually moving me forward. So if we can simplify the steps that we need to take, it makes it much easier to stick to them. Doesn't make it easy, just makes it easier. Because if it's a simple action, that means we can take it without it hopefully cascading and causing problems and disruption in other areas of life. It won't bleed over and then cause issues elsewhere. So that's what I'll leave you guys with tonight. If you want to kind of get clear on some ways that you can simplify this game for yourself, some ways that you can take the complexity, simplify, and make it easy for you to implement, just send me a DM. We'll get together, we'll have a quick call, and essentially what we'll do is we will build out a 4-step plan for you based on the exact 4-step plan that I use myself and this plan I use with my clients. We will build out a 4-step plan for you to get yourself out of pain, burn the belly fat, and of course to increase your strength and your power so that you can show up better across each domain of life. Any questions on this one, people? Drop them in the comments below. And if not, as always, I look forward to seeing you all see you in my next video. Take it easy.
