Is your Mindset stopping you from reaching your goals?

Your mindset determines whether you follow through on goals. Fixed mindset chases outcomes; growth mindset values progress. The speaker recommends both: pick a clear target and celebrate small wins along the way to avoid burnout and stay motivated.

Now I'm sure you don't need me to tell you, but in today's fast-paced world, it can be pretty tricky. In fact, it can be fucking chaotic as hell for many of us to stick to our goals and keep our head in the right place when we set these big targets for ourselves. And often it's just a simple case of we get stuck in the wrong mindsets. And it's not that they're actually wrong, it's more a case of just we use them in ways that don't serve us to get the outcomes that we need. Now I'm sure many of you know and you'll get it, like mindset's a big factor. It's, it's the driving force that leads us towards our goals. Yeah, there are different actions and things that we need to do. So for example, in health, we might need to change our food, we might need to start exercising, we might need to improve our rest and recovery, and so on. Like there might be actual things, habits, actions, behaviors that we need to do, but it's our mindset that's going to dictate whether we actually do those things. And then if we do do them, it's going to be that continued ability to apply the right mindsets that's going to allow us to stay on track and help us build momentum and stay consistent and so on, so that we can continue to get results in the long run. Because as I'm sure you know, many of us will do this thing where we set a goal, we start taking action, we kind of start moving towards the goal, and then we give up before we get there. And sometimes it's literally right, right at the finish line. We'll literally sort of be at the end, about to hit the, the big target, and then for, for some unknown or seemingly unknown reason, we tend to just hit the fuck it button and throw it all out the window. We blow up all our progress and then end up obviously regressing back to where we were, or in many cases even further back than, than previously. So what we kind of need to do in order to stay on track and avoid these moments where we sort of hit this fuck it button and sabotage ourselves is learn to juggle the difference between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. So many of us, will be predominantly fixed— or sorry, yeah, predominantly stuck in a fixed mindset. So what that means is with a fixed mindset, your only concern is the outcome. All you really care about is the outcome and getting to there, and nothing else is good enough until you've reached the particular outcome. I want to lose 20 pounds. I want to reach £100,000 a year. I want whatever it might be, and nothing is good enough until we see that target. I'm not good enough. My progress is not good enough. The results are not good enough. And so on. Now with a growth mindset, what we have instead is we're not so focused on the outcome and we tend to be more focused on the progress that we're making. So it's more on the process. So we don't just look at, am I reaching the goal? It's also a case of, well, am I improving as an individual? Are other areas of my life improving as a result of me trying to reach this goal? Oh, not just, oh, I've still got 10 pounds to go. Fuck me, I've already lost 10 pounds so far. So we don't only look forward at what we're chasing, we also look back at what we've already built and created for ourselves, and we allow ourselves to be grateful for that. We show gratitude, appreciation, and so on. Now, in an ideal world, we don't want to be stuck in any one or the other because they both have pros, they both have cons. As a general rule, if we were stuck in one, ideally we'd want to be stuck in a growth mindset. Because it is more centered around being better as a whole individual, not just one particular outcome. But at the same time, sometimes we do actually need that singular laser-focused target that we're aiming towards, because even though we could be focused on growth, what sometimes happens if we don't have a specific target that we're aiming towards, much of our action kind of gets lost or diluted because it's not specific and focused. So it's like, yeah, I'm getting progress, I'm grateful for this, and that's going well, and so on. And we look at things, so I am eating better, and I am sleeping better, and I do feel better, and my energy's up, which is all good. But we can have all of those particular things but maybe not be moving towards our fat loss goal, or our getting out of pain goal, or whatever it might be. So sometimes we do actually have to have that fixed target that we're aiming towards. But in order to keep us on track and focused on what it is we want to achieve, but also ensure we enjoy the progress. What we would do at the same time is employ that growth mindset to make sure that we appreciate the journey, we appreciate the effort that we're already putting in, the progress that we're already gaining, and that way it will help us to stay much more motivated, which is a very temporary thing, as I'm sure you've realized. But we want these sort of pockets of motivation which will help to continually build upon our momentum that we're hopefully gaining as a result of constantly taking action and moving towards our goal. So that's what I'll leave you guys with today. So if we're looking at mindset and thinking, well, what's the best kind of mindset for me to get there? Then we want to kind of juggle between this fixed mindset, which has a laser focus on the target we want to reach, and the growth mindset that also looks at what we, what we're achieving along our journey, along the path, so that we can appreciate the progress and the effort that we're putting in. And not just be like, oh well, I've still got 10 pounds to go, I've still got 8 pounds to go, I've still got 7 pounds to go, and so on. Because looking at it like you're always in a position of lack or always not quite yet, not quite there, not quite good enough, that can often become very demotivating and makes us feel like all this effort I'm putting in still isn't worth it because I haven't reached the end goal. So we want to juggle the two. So that's what I'll leave you guys with tonight. Just sort of have a sit with yourself. Think about where you're at perhaps when you're chasing down your goals. Maybe you're getting stuck too much in that fixed mindset. Or maybe you're not focused enough and you're too much in the growth mindset, too much about going easy on yourself, giving yourself sort of praise and gratitude, which may be, may be deserved, but it's maybe actually hindering you at the same time because you're not also holding yourself accountable and disciplined to the specific outcome that you want. So that's what I'll leave you guys with tonight. Thanks for watching. As always, if you have any questions, let me know in the comments below, and if not, I look forward to chatting with you guys in my next video. Take it easy.
