Q&A: How do I set goals I'll stick to?

Before setting a goal, figure out the emotional need it's meant to satisfy. Losing weight or earning more money might not actually deliver the happiness or recognition you're after. Identifying what you really want to feel makes you far more likely to stick with it.

Hey people, what's up? Welcome to our session tonight. I'm going to try and keep this one real quick, 2 minutes or less, because I'm actually in the middle of a course right now which happens to be California time, so we run right through into the night. Um, but anyway, so tonight's question is, how do I set goals that I will stick to? So this question came in a couple of hours ago. Um, it's quite a common theme that I get because a lot of people set goals and then just don't follow through. You know, we try the all-or-nothing thing and we fall off the bandwagon. If there is one tip that I can suggest when it comes to setting goals, I would say it's discover or sit down with yourself and take the time to learn or discover what is the goal of the goal. Now, for some people, that's a bit— what initially? And what I mean is, okay, cool, you want to lose weight or okay, you want more money. Why? What's the emotional feeling state that you're trying to receive as a result of achieving that goal. Because quite often we find that this thing that we think is going to be the thing that gets us there isn't necessarily it. It's like you might want to lose weight, you know, you might want a better body, you might want more money or whatever it might be, and that's absolutely fine. You might want that, but that might not actually be the vehicle that's going to get you that feeling state that you're actually feeling is missing from your life or missing from being consistent in your life and so on. So what we tend to find is that on average, almost everything that we do is to get an emotional need met. So when it comes to reaching our goals, etc., or setting goals, often it's because we want to reach an emotional need or fulfill an emotional need. So that's the thing I would say. Sit with yourself when you're writing down your goals. Obviously, we're rolling up into 2024 now. People are going to be setting goals, New Year's resolutions and all the rest of it. The biggest factor to consider is what is the goal of the goal? Why do I want this thing? What's the emotional feeling state that I am lacking or finding that I'm not, not experiencing enough that I need to have more frequently in my life? Why am I actually trying to achieve this goal? And will this goal get me that emotional state that I'm searching for? Could be happiness, fulfillment, could be a sense of achievement, could be recognition, or like there are lots of different things that it could be—worthiness and so on, love, acceptance, and, and lots of different things. What is it for you? Find out what that is and you'll be much more likely to not only find the specific path needed to reach it, but also to stick to it once you've made that decision. So that's what I'll leave you guys with tonight, nice and short, as I said. Of course, if you have any questions of your own, drop them in the comments below, and if not, I look forward to chatting with you guys tomorrow.
