Single Leg Takedown Attempt (Switch to the Back) - Grappling & Ground Fight

Master Wong shows how to switch to the back when your single-leg takedown gets sprawled. After the opponent blocks your hand, keep your head tight, pull the leg, and drive through their spine. From there he covers rear-naked chokes, elbow strikes, and calf locks.

What's up guys, welcome back to another lesson in the Master Wong Grappling and Ground Fight System. In today's lesson we're going to be talking about how to switch when you go in for the single leg. He manages to get the hand inside and try to sprawl away, how to switch to take his back. So you can either then take down, you can obviously go in for chokes, etc. Choice is yours once you're there. But obviously, you don't want to get to a position and you've committed everything to it and don't know what to do next in order to obviously continue your attack. So, if I can worry him, I'll show you guys what I'm talking about. So with this one, we're going to be going in off the jab. So I'm going to jab in order to distract him and then bang, I drop in for the single leg. Now this time he's a little bit smarter than before. Last time I was able to get in before the arm was there. Now he's been training, he's a bit smarter. I go here, as I drop this hand shoots in. So I'm still coming through the same, looking to get my shoulder in his hip, etc., head on the body and all that, so I can twist and take him down. But he's managed to get this arm in, bang. Now once I get here, he also looks to sprawl away. So because he's sprawled, sprawl, So he gets here. Now even if I twist like before, nothing happens. I can't take him down. Even if I keep my head on him without fully adjusting my body, there isn't much I can do to him. So here I go, bang, shoot in, take. As he starts to sprawl, I keep my head and I keep this tight so he can't get it fully away. I begin to pull this in slightly, I switch, and then I pull it out. And as I do that, this hand shoots up and meets the opposite hand. I grab and I drive my head through the spine. Now, not many people, of course, are going to just stand there once you're there. So what may happen is I go bang, I drop in, I grab, can't quite get through, switch, pull the leg. Because you'll notice as I pull this leg, he starts to lose balance. So I come around here I'm out, I'm pulling the leg, I find the opposite hand. My head drives straight through the center of his back and I'm pulling through his abdominal region here. So I go— and it's pretty uncomfortable. It's not going to end the fight, it just causes a nice distraction so you can go into something else. Now from here, if for instance he now tries to attack me or spin into me, first thing I want to do is drop below his attack. So if you just shift forward a touch. So I'm here, I squeeze in. Now, for instance, he goes to twist here. I drop my shoulder to the level of his hips, grab his ankles, and now as I drive through, I pull the ankles. So I go here like so. He will then obviously fall, and then I can either, like before, get away or choose to continue the fight. So to show you that once more, bang, I drop in Here, I start to switch, I pull, turn, squeeze, he drops— sorry, I drop as he elbows, and then I get the takedown. So one other option would be to obviously go straight up for the neck as soon as I get that. So instead I'll go boom, coming in, pull, I switch, head, and now from here he can't actually elbow without fully turning around. So from this, as the elbows, I switch into here, then obviously jump up and can take the rear naked choke. The choice, as always, is yours. It just depends on the style of fighter you are, really. So just come forward so I'm not all the way over there. So bang, drop it in, switch here, now the elbow bang, and I turn up to here, this leg over the top, and I squeeze. Of course, if I'm this way, hand is here, I'm in my bicep, hand behind the head, and pull. I then stretch him away with my hips and big chest, etc. You basically extend your thoracic spine, drive your chest into his back, which pulls his head away. So the one other option you have Basically, once I get to the floor, boom, I'm here, use the elbow, bang. From here, if you're quick enough, you do have the option of certain locks. So from here, if I now— at this point, is this— it's not too bad, no? No pain? Right. Once I tip forward, that is now horrible. And obviously, if I get the choke as well when I'm squeezing, there isn't a lot he's going to be able to do. So that one, basically, once I've taken him down, bang, rear leg. So the one that's inside his stance steps across just by his knee joint. This foot goes here, and I look to crush his calf against my shin. And the more I tip forward and try to put my hips towards his, the more painful it becomes. And then take the choke. And choke him out at the same time. So it's pretty horrible. But of course, like anything, he's not just going to let you get there. So it's all about being quick and obviously outsmarting your opponent as you go. So once more, bang, here, pull, switch, head drive, takedown. Then you can go in for your lock submissions, etc. Thank you. So just get used to the switch. In, this leg steps out, turn, pivot on the spot, head drives through each time. It is a little bit more complex because obviously he will start moving around and be resisting you at some point. Then obviously you've just got to step your game up a notch in order to stay ahead of him. So try it out, guys. See you next lesson.
