Struggling With Time Management?

The real problem isn't time management, it's self-management. You overcommit, make impossible to-do lists, and skip your own deadlines, then blame lack of time. Everyone gets the same 24 hours. Fix your discipline and what you promise yourself, not your calendar.

So one of the most frequent, uh, kind of struggles or complaints that I hear my clients and friends, family, etc. talk about, particularly those who are busy, like busy entrepreneurs or guys that have a busy profession, one of the biggest struggles that I tend to hear is that they just struggle to manage their time. Time management's always the biggest issue, and there's this part of them that knows, well, they're there are sayings and statements like structure will set you free and you need a good plan so that you can follow the plan in order to obviously get to the outcomes you want because you just follow this schedule or this plan that you've set up. Now, the catch-22 that we have is we are just man, right? We're human, we're man or woman, of course. And ultimately it's like, okay, well, we've got time, this thing outside of us. Now, depending on your perspective, some people don't even believe time exists and that it's a man-made construct and all the rest of it. But either way, if time does exist, then it's this thing beyond us anyway, that's beyond our control. Then if it doesn't exist, well, if it doesn't exist, it still can't be controlled. So we run around spending our time, wasting our energy, trying to manage time when the issue isn't time itself or our inability to manage it. It's actually our inability to manage ourselves within the span of what we experience of as time. So it's not a case of, oh, I need to set everything up on a schedule, and then in between the hours of 8 and 9 I'm going to do this, and then from 9 until 10:30 I'll do that, then from 10:30 till 11 I'm going to do this thing. It's not so much that. It's your ability, if you do make that plan, to then actually hold yourself accountable to those commitments that you've now made in your calendar, right? I said I was going to do this, this, and this at these particular hours. I now have to manage myself in relation to those tasks that I've set for myself. The catch-22 for most of us is we find it very difficult to set our own deadlines and to hold ourselves accountable to our promises to ourself. So what we do instead is say, "All right, well, I'm going to complete this, this, this, and this," and we give ourself a multitude of different tasks to complete in the day, sometimes with a schedule, sometimes without. But either way, we often give ourselves so many things that we actually overwhelm ourselves and often burden ourselves with too many things to do which are way beyond our current capacity. So then what we end up doing is essentially overwhelming ourselves. And of course, when we become overwhelmed, we then don't take action at the same level that we would if we felt confident and courageous about doing the thing. If we knew for a fact we could get these things done when we said we were going to do them, We just get on with them. We do it and knock each one off and tick off our boxes. Yeah, completed all my tasks. The catch is there is this part of us that kind of knows we've overestimated the amount that we could get done in that day or within that week. And then that subconscious overwhelm, and even sometimes the conscious overwhelm, but that part of us that's now overwhelmed with this huge to-do list of things then can't act in alignment with those things. And then what do we do? We blame time. I just, I've got so many things on. There's just not enough time in the day. The catch is we all have the same amount of time in the day, in the week, in the month, in the year. But for some reason, some people manage to do it and get their stuff done and others don't. And the simple reason for that is not because they can manage time better. It's because they can manage themselves better within the span of time that we experience. So that's just a little something for you guys to think about here this weekend. If you feel as though you are struggling with your own time management and your ability to kind of stick to your schedules and your routines. Maybe it's not actually time that needs managing, it's learning instead how to manage yourself. As always guys, thank you for watching. Of course, if you have any questions or you want me to dig in this a little bit deeper, or maybe you have some thoughts, ideas, and perspectives of your own that you would like to share, feel free to post them in the comments below. And of course, I will get back to you guys as soon as I can, and obviously we can continue this conversation. Or begin a new one. Take it easy, people. Thanks for watching, and I will chat to you soon.
