The BIG Problem With Supplements!

Tyrone Bray argues that most people use supplements as a shortcut instead of building real habits around food, exercise, and discipline. Supplements should fill gaps only after you nail the basics: high-quality protein, carbs, and fats. Without personal effort in diet and training, no pill will work.

So as you guys very likely know, we have a multi-billion dollar industry in supplements. Now many of you have probably used supplements yourself and maybe even use them right now. And if I was to be totally honest, there is definitely a place for them. And on occasion I'll use supplements myself, on occasion I'll even recommend supplements to clients and so on. But there is a big problem with supplements that many people don't even realize exists. And unfortunately, it's because the problem doesn't necessarily exist with the supplements themselves. It's more to do with our mindset towards them. You see, the catch is most people use supplements as an excuse to avoid having a healthy lifestyle. Now, the catch is, of course, we know with a healthy lifestyle that requires effort, it requires time, it requires resource, and so on. So supplements seem like the simple option. Oh, well, actually, maybe rather than having a clean diet, where I actually have to take responsibility for myself and actually cook food and take time out to prep and clean and blah-dee-blah. Rather than do that, maybe I can just pop some pills and get the result. The catch is, in my experience, most people will not get the result they want if they only supplement. I mean, let's face it, the clue is in the name. They are called supplements for a reason, because they are of course supposed to supplement a healthy lifestyle. Now, along with that, even the disclaimers that you see on pretty much all supplements say, "To be used in conjunction with a healthy diet and lifestyle." Now, of course, some of that is just the bullshit that they have to put on the pack or on the bottle in order to cover their own ass legally, but at the same time, there is a lot of truth in that statement. If you just take supplements in the hope that they will prevent you from having to actually live a healthy lifestyle, that requires self-responsibility and effort, then unfortunately you'll just continue to remain as you are. You'll continue to stay unhealthy, potentially overweight, feeling tired, feeling lethargic, and not able to reach your goals because supplements are not the answer. They're not the thing that's missing that's preventing you getting to the goal. They can be used in conjunction with the thing that's missing, but they will never replace it. Now, there is a nuance, of course. There are occasions, a bit like with medicine, where, oh my God, I really needed this particular medicine in order to give my body a kick up the ass and give it a boost. Same with certain supplements on occasion. But for the average person who's not in that crisis-type situation, then we must make sure that we focus on macronutrient— sorry, we must focus on macronutrient density first before we worry about micronutrient density. Now, that's not to say that it's not important, because it is. We do need those micronutrients. But we need to make sure we're getting adequate energy in, in the form of high-quality protein, high-quality carbs, and high-quality fats before we worry about, okay, well now, now I've got this good base level, do I now need to add in potentially a supplement in order to, sorry, in order to address anywhere where I may be lacking? Maybe there are a few holes in my diet, maybe I don't eat enough of this particular type of food, 'Or because of the type of foods I do eat, I don't get enough of this particular nutrient, so therefore now I will supplement to make up for the deficit,' rather than using supplements to account for the fact that we don't eat high-quality protein, we don't eat high-quality carbs, and we don't eat high-quality fats. Unfortunately, that mentality, that idea, 'Well, I can just supplement my way to health,' is what keeps many people stuck. Now, I get it, we're busy, we've got shit and chaos and stress going on in our lives and so on, But unfortunately, if you truly want the result, well then you truly have to put in some effort. You truly have to take responsibility. And as I'm saying, it doesn't mean you can never use supps. It just means they're not the answer. They're not the thing that's gonna get you to health, but they can help assist that if you're willing to step up and do the real work that's required, which of course is in the diet, is in the exercise, is in the mindset, and so on. We need those things to be laid down as a foundation first, and then supplements can actually accelerate your results. And this is whether we're talking maybe the use of supplementing with protein or multivitamins and minerals or digestive enzymes or probiotics and so on. Like they can all help, they all have their place, but they cannot be used in favor of real food. They're used to supplement the real food that we're having and maybe account for any deficiencies that we may have based on what we currently have available to us. So where in your life right now do you know that you're maybe not stepping up in the way that you should? You're maybe using things like supplements or quick fixes as a way to try and get the result, but what you're finding is it's not actually getting you there. You're just essentially running around on the, the hamster wheel feeling like you're moving forward but not actually getting anywhere, not getting the result that you want.
