Water - How Much do YOU Need?

Tyrone Bray from Titan Health explains why the standard 8-glasses-a-day rule doesn't work. He uses Dr. Batmanghelidj's method: divide your weight in pounds by 2 to get daily ounces of water, or multiply kilograms by 0.033 for liters. A 150-pound person needs 75 ounces daily.

Hey guys, what's up? Tyrone Bray here, founder of Titan Health and Performance, and welcome to this week's health tip. So in today's video, we're going to be talking about water, and more specifically, how much water you should be drinking each day. Now, it's often one of the very first questions I'll get from a new client once I start working with them on their nutrition and lifestyle. It's a case of, "Well, how much water should I be drinking? This guy said it's that much, that guy says it's this much, I read here it was that much." And often people are just confused because obviously there are so many different recommendations out there. And then the trouble you have with most of these recommendations is the fact that they're very generalized. Everybody should drink 3 liters, or everybody should drink 8 glasses, that type of thing. But the trouble is, if you want an individualized outcome, you have to take an individualized approach. So what we do here is we use the recommendations from the book Your Body's Many Cries for Water. Now in this book, Dr. Batmanghelidj recommends that you drink half your body weight in ounces of water a day. So for instance, if you weigh 150 pounds, you take that body weight, you divide it by 2, that would give you 75. So you would drink 75 ounces of water a day. Now 75 ounces works out to just over 9.5 half-pint glasses. Don't worry if you don't know your body weight in pounds. you can use your body weight in kilos, and instead you would times that by 0.033, and this will tell you how many liters you should be drinking each day. So for instance, if you weigh 70 kilograms, you times it by 0.033, this will give you 2.31. So you would drink 2.31 liters of water a day, which also works out to just over 9.5 half-pint glasses. So as you can see, it's a pretty simple system we use here, and it's completely individual because it's based on your own body weight. You don't base it on anybody else's, not your partner's, your friends', or anything like that. Just purely your own. Take your body weight, either divide it by 2 to find out how many ounces you should be— sorry, your body weight in pounds, that is. Divide it by 2 to find out how many ounces of water you should be drinking, or obviously your body weight in kilograms, times it by 0.033 to find out how many liters of water you should be drinking. Thanks for watching, guys, and I hope to see you next time.
