Is your older dog slowing down? If so, you should understand two things. First off, slowing down is not normal, and secondly, slowing down is not just due to old age. So listen up, you guys. If you have a large older dog who's slowing down, the most common reason for that is orthopedic pain located in their spine or their hips. Number two on the list may be, unfortunately, abdominal cancer, but But the good news is that your veterinarian can take one set of x-rays and diagnose both problems many times. If you have a small older dog who's slowing down, the most common reason again is orthopedic pain. But number 2 on the list would be dental disease because small older dogs are poster children for significant periodontal disease, which can create daily pain for them. Number 3 on the list would be heart disease. And your veterinarian can easily diagnose these things with a combination of physical exam and perhaps some tests. I'm Dr. Kevin.
