Dr. Kevin Toman, an emergency vet, explains that small amounts of chocolate won't kill your dog, though large quantities can be dangerous. His 120-pound Bernese Mountain Dog ate a pound of Hershey's Kisses with no serious harm. Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, and agitation if your dog eats chocolate.

Will a bite of chocolate kill your dog this holiday season? Let's put this old myth to bed once and for all. The answer is no. Listen, I ran an emergency clinic for about 10 years earlier in my life, and during that time, I'll bet I saw 100 pet parents come screaming in because their dog had the nerve to eat a bite of chocolate. Do you know how many of those dogs died? Zero. Now listen, I'm not saying that a 10-pound poodle can eat a whole box of See's Candy because that's clearly not the case. But that 10-pound poodle can absolutely eat a chocolate chip or 2 or 3 without getting themselves into a jam. And that 80-pound Labrador of yours could probably polish off that 1-pound box of See's Candy. Let me tell you a funny story about my 120-pound Bernese Mountain Dog, McGregor, who I loved with all my heart. At one point, he ate a 1-pound bag of multicolored Hershey's Kisses, and while it didn't bother him at all, it damn near killed me because he shit multicolored foil for a week. The most common signs of chocolate toxicity are going to be vomiting or diarrhea and agitation. If this worries you and you see your dog eat a bunch of chocolate, then let's make them vomit. How do you do that? You pour a little bit of hydrogen peroxide down their throat, and you do it, and you do it, and you do it again until they vomit. That will solve the problem for you. I'm Dr. Kevin Toman Toman. I run helpingpetslivelonger.com. I'm passionate about this, and I'd love to work with you and your pet to help them live their best life.
