A Norwegian science rocket almost triggered nuclear war in 1995

The video recounts a 1995 incident where Norway launched a harmless scientific research rocket for atmospheric studies. Russian early‑warning radars mistakenly identified the launch as a high‑altitude missile potentially carrying a nuclear warhead, triggering an escalation that opened the nuclear briefcase. As the alert moved up the chain of command, a technician noticed the rocket's trajectory was upward and non‑threatening, matching the known scientific launch schedule. Realising the civilian launch data had not been entered into military databases, he corrected the classification, downgrading the alarm and halting retaliation protocols within minutes. The crisis was resolved silently, with no public notice, highlighting a critical communication gap between civilian scientific programs and military defense systems.
