Dan Novaes reflects on entrepreneurship and the importance of building a fulfilling life while running businesses. He admires Richard Branson for combining adventurous living (hot-air balloon trips, windsurfing, buying an island) with a long career of varied business ventures, and contrasts that with his own experience of running multiple businesses. Novaes endorses having multiple income sources but advises it should require minimal time (he suggests not more than ~four hours per month) if you want to excel at one primary pursuit.

My entrepreneurial career, there's a lot of people I'm inspired by, like, someone like Richard Branson. That guy just seems like a great guy. And also because I relate to him and it's like there's like 50 different virgin brands. I wish that I could take in more time when I was younger to build everything that I'm doing in one kind of, like, thing that made sense and builds upon each other as opposed to, hey, like, I used to think it was cool. Like, no. I have like seven businesses and it's like, it's okay to have a few different sources of income. I'm totally all about that. But it shouldn't take more than like, four hours of your month if you're going to do that if you want to be great at one thing. And so I think, like, you know, he's been able to do that and he's always pushing the limits on different business models, and he's done it his whole life. But at the same time, why I also respect him is that the guy seems like he has a great balance in his life. While he was building his businesses, he hot air ballooned across the world like six times, like the 70s. Almost died, like, so many times. Just has, like, this desire to live life. The photos I remember of the guy is like, him and windsurfing and his island and whatever, that he bought this island in some crazy situation, gave some, like, offer to impress, like, a girl, and then they ended up accepting the offer at like 90 less than the asking price. And I was like, this guy's amazing. Like, you know what I mean? And so I look at that and again, don't know him personally, but based on everything I've read, I'm like, you know, that's a great way of being. Sick of wasting all this money.
