In 1970 a 45‑foot, multi‑ton whale carcass washed ashore at Florence, Oregon, rotting and creating a public health nuisance. Local officials decided to use a large amount of dynamite to blast the whale into small pieces, hoping birds and scavengers would finish the cleanup. The explosion, however, sent massive chunks of blubber flying onto the beach, road, and parked cars, crushing a vehicle and spreading a stronger odor. The blast failed to reduce the problem; the remaining carcass still required manual removal. The incident was filmed and later became a notorious example of a quick‑fix solution that created a larger mess, serving as a reminder of the pitfalls of ill‑considered emergency responses.
