Your brain runs on autopilot to save energy, but you can interrupt it. Notice an automatic reaction, pause to switch it off, then choose from new options. The hard part is deciding which option actually serves you, not just recognizing what you feel.

We, our brains are pattern-following systems. We, our brains create and follow patterns. That's the fundamental neurological function. And we do that in order to create efficiency. And we learn and we do it again, but we don't have to follow the patterns. And if we pause, we have the opportunity to disrupt and say, okay, so I have this immediate reaction. I can follow that, but I don't have to. I have options. So the first step is to notice. The second step is to stop. Disrupt the pattern, switch off autopilot and say, okay, so what are some more options? And then the third step is to step forward towards one of those options. And I think this is actually the hardest part because the third step, once we've gone off of autopilot and we have, we see a lot of options, which option are we going to choose? And I think this is where we move from emotional intelligence to emotional wisdom. How do we figure out when there isn't a clear, when there isn't a clear answer?
