Why Being Yourself Is Harder Than You Think!

In this solo reflective talk, the speaker examines how societal expectations—such as being required to marry a man or a woman—create an early internal sense of alienation for many people. He explains that this "internal alienation" stems from a mismatch between prescribed gender/relationship norms and an individual's own biochemistry, physiology, and psychosocial makeup. From this premise, he defines authenticity as the act of being oneself in spite of one's vulnerabilities, not because one is free of them, and also as being okay with oneself regardless of external validation. He argues that before attempting to champion allyship for others, one must first confront and work on the personal areas they consider "shitty" or weak. The speaker notes that he has previously explored these ideas on LinkedIn and has incorporated them into a curriculum used in his conversations, positioning self‑reflection as a prerequisite to effective allyship.
