Welcome to the Women of Wealth and Worth Summit, where we are diving deep into creating your best life with intention with some amazing women. So imagine this. As a young child, you go to a trusted adult and you tell them your deepest, darkest secret.
Mm-hmm.
And instead of getting that love and that compassion that you would expect, You get a look like, oh, and you think, oh my goodness, there must be something wrong with me. Maybe I can't speak my truth. Maybe I can't step out and show the world who I really am. So you move forward in life. And then in order to escape your small town, in order to escape the life that you're living, you sign up for the Marine Corps, end up becoming a single mom. And then go on to become a nanny on welfare. Then life throws you for a surprise and you go on to create a beautiful, abundant, amazing business where you are so unapologetic about who you are that you can step out in the world and completely transform lives. Today's guest did exactly that, and we're going to have an unfiltered, totally raw conversation I would love to introduce our guest today, Mandy Perry. Welcome, Mandy.
Oh my God, girl, I'm just so floored at your skill right now. You're so incredible. Oh my word. I'm so excited to be here.
Thank you. And I am so excited, you guys. I want to share with you, we were having an amazing, fun, high vibe conversation right before we pressed record. And I was just like, you know, from the moment I first met Mandy online, we didn't meet in person, but I was, you know, looking at all of her stuff and I was just like, oh my gosh, this woman is so unfiltered. She's so unapologetic about who she is. And there's something about her where I could tell she's so okay with being who she is.
Hmm.
And so today I would love to dive a little bit more into that. And Mandy, if you could share with us, because, you know, those of us who were there, we know it's not an overnight thing. Share with us the process of how you went from being a single mom nanny on welfare to now helping women build their lives and build these amazing businesses and having your own amazing business where you have so much free time.
Oh, so good. I'm so excited to be here. Okay. You know, it was a long, long journey that started with me challenging some of the things that I was taught. You know what I mean? Like, it really began with the very, very basics, like even just being taught that I was stupid. Just, I'm a stupid blonde. I'm only good for, you know, literally was taught like, oh, you're just a pair of boobs, basically. So even just beginning with challenging the stories that were taught around me, and every single step of the way felt terrifying. I never felt ready. I never felt like I was going to be enough. I was always pretty certain that I was going to fail miserably and this was going to be the thing that made it all fall apart. And that pattern is still there, but I began with just starting to go to like a community college and it was like, like, I'm smart. Like, I got an A at college. And then I went to state school and I was like, I got into state school. Like, I started, maybe I'm not stupid. Maybe I'm not born for nothing. Maybe I'm not discardable. And then I got into university and I was like, oh my God. And then I left university because it wasn't my calling and I lost all the kudos and everybody told me that I was crazy. And, and it was just a journey of consistently believing That feeling I had inside of like, this wasn't like this, this ain't quite it. This ain't the thing. This isn't it. There's something else here. And every time I saw a small opening, I would just have the courage to leap through. Like, this was really my honest, like, honestly, for that first 10 years of like just, just going to school, leaping, being on welfare, you know, going to school, working for someone else's family, taking care of my kids, trying to put food on the table, crying myself to sleep every night. It was really just like Well, why the hell not? I mean, can't fall off the floor. You know what I mean? Like, it's only up from here. What's the worst thing that's gonna happen? I get in tons of debt and then what? What are you gonna do? You know what I mean? So it really was just like, what's— nothing. I understood nothing bad could come from just trying. You know what I mean?
I do. Yes, that speaks to me so much because I think a lot of women, and I'm thinking about the woman right now who's watching this and thinking like, Ding, ding. Yes. Like, they relate with that feeling of identifying with this conditioned or programmed idea of who they are. And then so many people are afraid to even step out into that courage you were talking about.
You know, you had nothing to lose.
So you stepped out, you tried. I think, you know, there's women right now who are sitting here going, but I don't have that courage you're talking about. To try, to step out. They feel that call that you were saying, you felt like you were called for more.
Yep.
So, what would you say to that woman?
You know what? You might not like my answer, but I'm gonna shoot straight, okay? It really is just about understanding the principle that everything you desire in life comes from choosing it right now. So, whether that was, it was just, it doesn't matter. It's not— you're never going to feel like, oh, I figured it out. Now I know the process, right? Like, my favorite quote ever is, if you can see the whole path, it's not yours. If it's yours, you can only see one step in front of you. And nobody likes that. We want to feel safe. We want to feel certain. But you don't get to have that. You don't get to. And that's just entitlement. Like, I deserve to feel certain of how it's all going to work out. Like, well, you're human, so you don't get to have that. That's just the way that works. But what you do get to have is the one step in front of you. And if you're being really honest, You know what that one step is. And most people, I don't know what that is. No, no, no, you're trying to, you're trying to figure out the first 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 steps. You know what that one step is. And the entire process was one step. I went to school, I was ADHD, I couldn't focus, I couldn't. So I learned to like walk around reading out loud in the book and getting my brain to focus. For 10 years, I trained my brain just to be able to focus.
You know what I mean?
So it's just one more step, one more step. So My answer really is you don't have to have the courage because what you feel like you have to have the courage for is to do the whole thing. But when you just do the one step that you feel called to do, no matter how minuscule or irrelevant it feels, on the other side of that one step, one of two things is going to happen. You're going to have wisdom of success or you're gonna have a failure and you can become that person who has wisdom from the failure. And that's it. And you're always on the other side of it. And what I learned was If I just do this one thing, on the other side, I'm going to— that person will know how to do the next thing. And we hear that in these cliché things, but I mean, like, if you just really understood that for one second, like, if you just stop and be like, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, maybe I've heard that before, maybe I've heard it's like eerie theory. What? No, no, no. I mean, tell the damn truth about what that one next step is, and then just remind yourself, if I do that one step, I'll have become the woman or the human being who now knows how to take that next step. And that's what it looks like the whole time. Still, $1.4 million first 3 years. It still looks just like that.
Oh my goodness. I love that. So much of what I'm hearing, and I hope that people are like really paying attention to what you said there, is like this inner trust. Because I think a lot of that fear that we have of, you know, like we want to know the whole thing, we want to know the whole picture, we want to know, like have someone like draw it out for us so that we have this certainty. Is it really boils down to this trusting yourself to take that next little teeny step that's going to lead you. And I think a lot of women, they see that and they know that their dreams inside are so big that it scares them and they pull back.
Yep.
And what I'm hearing is that you learned how to trust yourself. You talked about in university you had ADHD, so you, you learned how to trust what was going to serve you and how it was going to work for you. Have you always had that inner trust in yourself? And then if not, how did you get there?
It's funny because you say inner trust and that still doesn't resonate with me, even though I use those words too, because people understand what I'm talking about. It still doesn't feel like inner trust. It feels like a guess.
Hmm.
That's what it feels— it feels like I'm just always guessing. I'm just, I'm guessing, I'm making my best guess. I'm making my best guess. But what I know is like, I think the best analogy I ever heard was You know, you, you just get in a car. I think it was Tony Robbins. You get in a car and you drive somewhere and you get out and you don't like where you are. What do you do? You get in the damn car and drive somewhere else. I got out and I don't like where I am. Get in the damn car and drive somewhere else. And that's basically what it's like. You, like, take a guess. It never really feels like, yes, at least to me, it has never felt like, oh, there's what my inner voice is telling me to do, and I'm certain, and now I'm going to go do that and everything's going to be great. That is never what it feels like. It feels like, I think this is the thing I should do. And then you leap and do the thing. And if you get out of the car and you don't like where you are, you get back in the car and you keep driving again. And success comes by doing it right now. It's not a bad decision. I screwed up. It was the wrong decision. That's never what takes people out. Never. Trust me, I have made some huge mistakes in my— I'm like a 4-year-old toddler running a global company. 4 years ago, I was a woman on welfare with no business experience. You can trust I'm making massive mistakes. But what I know, it's the time that it takes for you to make the decision. It's understanding that if you just do it right now, if you just take your best guess and take that one step forward without thinking about all the other things, that it's always going to work out every single time because you just get back in the car and go again. You don't sit there and live here for 2 years and throw a temper fit about it.
I love that so much. That resonates so incredibly hugely for me because What I hear you say is that, um, you know, I hear people say all the time, they, they're, they say, I'm just afraid of making the wrong decision. And honestly, it's not about making the wrong decision because, as I heard you say earlier, is that you're either going to, you know, move forward and propel, or you're going to gain wisdom from this experience.
Right.
And I truly believe, and let me know if this is true for you too, that The only wrong decision is no decision, because then you stay stuck.
Was it Carnegie, I think, said that nothing will hold you back more than indecision? Nothing, nothing on the planet. And I find that to be wildly and completely true. And when we say, I don't know, it's literal crap. It's just absolute crap to pretend you don't know. It's like a socially acceptable way to procrastinate. That's what it is. It's not real. I call it a boogeyman. You know, when you're a kid and you're in your bed and you're so sure there's a boogeyman in your closet or under your bed and you tuck your covers under your feet And you pull them up, and you stick it over your head, and you're just like, ah! And you want to turn the light on, but you're too scared to get out of bed, and you go there, and you're like, just, it's so real! You're so certain that it's real, but it's not! It's not real! Yeah, I 100% would agree with everything you just said, yes. Yes!
I love that, because people will tell you, people watching this will be like, oh my gosh, that's so Val! Because I always say, like, when my clients try and do that, they learn really quickly. They say, I don't know, and I'm like, Great. So if you did know, what would it be?
No.
And I sit there and I wait because, you know, it takes one to know one. And that was definitely one of my things was I would like either avoid or would pretend like I didn't know because in that confusion, there's safety.
Yeah. I don't have to do anything.
Yeah, absolutely.
And it kind of— it does.
It gives you off the— it takes you kind of off the hook.
Yeah.
Of that.
Yeah.
And you know, something that I think is really interesting that I would love to unpack a little bit is, I heard you say in one of your videos on YouTube, if you guys are looking for some great content, go watch her on YouTube. You said that for the first 28 years, your entire life was trauma and drama.
Yep. It's funny too, because I admitted earlier, I'm really bad with time. If I said 28, it wasn't because I actually attempted suicide when I was 30.
Wow.
So, yep. So it was really like, and right after that was obviously, that is a life-defining moment. And after that, that was when like, it was just, that's when that sonic boom went off. Like, like something had to give. Like, yeah. So it really was like 31 was when everything really started to change. Yeah.
Wow. So that's huge. And I'm glad that you said that. Thank you for sharing that, because I know there is, you know, if you just look at statistics and then add what's going on in the world right now, there's someone who's in that place right now.
Oh yeah.
Who is looking around saying, what's the point?
Yep.
What is that?
For over 30 years, what is the friggin point? My whole life, I just thought, my whole life I didn't want to die, but I did attempt suicide once when I was 14 and once when I was 30. But my whole life was just like, I, if I just slipped into the abyss, it would be totally fine with me. My whole life felt that way until my mid-30s. Wow. Yeah.
And I'm sure there wasn't just like one defining moment. Maybe there was, and you can share that. But so for the person who's watching, who might be in that place right now, thinking like, there's no point, I've been doing all the things, I've been doing everything for the look good, everything to like, you know, keep people happy. And now here I am in that place where I'm like, if I fell in the abyss, it'd be okay. How do you go from being in that place to being this like lit up amazing version of you, which I think I kind of know the answer to what you're gonna say, but like the version of you that you are today?
You know, what comes to mind, I was trying to remember like what my words were back then, but it was basically like I hit this place of— I think, I think I let go of my ego in a way, and I just hit this place of— or I healed just enough. It's one of the two. I healed just enough to believe that It could all burn down and whatever would be on the other side would be better than this. So, I mean, it was small things like the man I was with at the time would, you know, he's got a big heart, but he had his own patterns and his own unhealthy stuff. And he would, you know, he would always make me responsible for his financial, you know, he would like scare me and say things in a way that scared me. And then I created the pattern on my end of rescuing. That was like what I did. That was just, that's the pattern I created with him. And I remember just being like, if I say no, I might actually have to live in a cardboard box. Like, I really, really might be homeless. And I said no anyway. It was those kind of things right there, like the courage to just say, whatever happens on the other side of this happens, and it's got to be better than this. And I just— that was it. Like, I just— I started doing these— I started saying no. I started all the things that just scared the crap out of me. I heard this one thing and it changed my whole life. And it was basically like, you know, I'm sure we've all heard it a million times, but sometimes we hear it and then we hear it. And I heard it and it said, everything is on the other side of fear. Right? But like, are we really hearing that? That means every time something scares the crap out of us or we're terrified of it, we're like, oh my God, that's the thing right there. So it was like, I just started being like, what's scaring the crap out of me? Oh, this conversation is. Oh, that thing. Or this might happen. Or it was just all these different different things, and I started just giving myself permission to be like, okay, I don't know how to navigate this, I'm going to stumble my way through. I didn't know how to tell him no. I didn't know how to deal with the aftermath of that, but I just did it anyway. It was just, that was the thing terrifying me, and I started doing those kind of things everywhere in my life, in every area of my life, just facing them one at a time, because there was hundreds, hundreds. I had such a disaster of a life that every area of my life was a mess.
Yeah.
You just start one at a time, and you don't worry about how the whole thing's going to get fixed, just one at a time.
I love that because I think that especially as women, I think we have a tendency to try and take on so many things. And, you know, you said that pattern of rescuing, you know, like what woman— I don't know, there's probably women out there who don't relate to that, but oh my gosh, yes.
You know, I think it's especially women. Right.
Like especially women who are coaches, consultants, like we love sharing, we love helping, and that pattern of like rescuing. That's so deeply rooted in like a way of being. And something I heard you say was that, you know, you were talking about how you came out of that life and you decided to make a change. And you talked about how my identity is who I say I am. I have that choice.
Yep. Moment by moment. Moment by moment by moment by moment, I have that choice. And there was a couple things I remember. I was reading this, um, the Messenger Bible. I was just at a friend's house and it was sitting there on the thing and I just flipped it open and I read this thing and oh my God, did it unlock so many things for me. And it basically was this verse about how the space between a man and God is sacred and even the angels don't dare tread there. And for whatever reason, I was so aware of rescuing, and I understood that to myself. My interpretation of that was like, when I go rescue someone, that is their work, their soul's work between them and God, Source, Creator, Universe, whatever it is. That's their soul's journey, and I'm interrupting that, and even angels don't dare tread there. And I was like, oh, I just like saw it. I just could see it. I saw that I was weakening that person. I saw that it was selfish as shit because it had nothing to do with them and everything to do with my uncomfortability in my head. Your problems are making my brain foggy and I need to clean it up and make it go away so I feel like I can go where I need to go. And I just would clean up the mess, clean up the mess, clean up the mess, and then play the victim and be frustrated and angry. And why don't you just do what you need to do? Oh my God, did I feel like that every second of my life. If everybody else would just do what they need to do, right? And that's how I felt. But it was not them, it was me. And then I had to get to the place where I believed, truly believed, others are having the experience of life that they desire. There, you know how I— you know what, I really learned that lesson when I, when I made that first $500K year, my very first year. And now I had tons of money and I offered this person to go to rehab and I offered this person to— and nobody did a damn thing. Not one thing. And I was like, this had nothing to do with money. I can't— there's no rescuing. They're living the life they want to live. They want to sit in front of the TV all day and they're allowed to. Who am I to judge that? There's no right or wrong. That's the— and I believe and trust, I hold them able to manage their own emotions. So, if they're upset about something, I hold them as able to manage their emotions. And it was like, that just sort of started unraveling and unrolling. And I'll tell you, the most pain I ever felt was waking up to the reality, before I understood this, it was waking up to the reality that my money couldn't save my family.
Hmm.
Because I had just spent 10 years with that story, and I arrived there, and then it didn't solve it. And it was really a dark night of the soul that I went through understanding that and just releasing these things and the patterns. And yeah, it was work. It was real work.
Gosh, you know that, like, wow, that speaks to my soul at a very deep level because I think there's a lot of women, and I know for myself in my 20s, I was chasing the money. And you know, that was the dark night of my soul time period, like 23 to 28 was like Yeah, trying to fill that hole. And I think that, you know, a lot of people chase money because they want to fill that hole. They think it's somehow going to solve something. And something I know is true for you, because I've heard you speak about it, is that, you know, it's not about the money. It's not about that. It's like about knowing deep down that you're called for something more and knowing that that thing is inside of you, and that no matter what, that is what qualifies you to do what you do, and that is what you chase.
Yeah, it's— you don't— there's no desire inside of us that's not there for a purpose. It's there because it's meant to guide you somewhere. And we have all these stories, especially if we've been at any kind of abuse or sexual abuse or something like that. Like, desire can be a very scary word, a topic, and feeling, and being in our body can be very scary. And it is what it is. You know what I mean? Like, we're strong. We can handle— it's, look, a feeling is nothing more than like an association. It's just a sensation in the body. Like, it's just a sensation in the body. Like, that's what it is. And we're like, oh, I don't want to be disappointed.
Like, really?
The shit you've been through in your life, you can't handle a sensation waving through your body for 60 seconds? And if it keeps staying there, you're retriggering it over and over. It's not even 60 seconds. It's not even almost 60 seconds. So, it's really just like, okay, like fear. Okay? have learned to associate that sensation in my body that we call fear, namely, I associate that with safety, which people are like, how? Well, because to me, it means that I'm expanding, I'm growing, I'm pushing boundaries, I'm living on that front edge. How could I not be safe when I'm pushing the boundaries and I'm growing and I'm expanding? And growing feels like growing. It doesn't feel like safety. It feels like freaking growing. So, when I feel that inside or I feel pressure, like heavy pressure, like, whoa, there's like a $100,000 problem, or I know I feel safe in that, like, oh yeah, we're expanding, we're growing, and it's safe to expand and grow. So we can change the association we have to that sensation in our body by identifying it and choosing what we want. I mean, neuroscience, we can rewire all that stuff, and it just starts with telling the truth.
Hmm, I love that. And so much of what I hear, like, encompassed in what you're saying and who you are, what you're embodying, who you're being, Is that, yeah, we can choose that. Yeah, we can grow, and we can expand, and we can just, like, be a creation that we decide to be, and that starts with us.
Yeah, and that would have pissed me off 2 years ago. It would have so pissed me off, like, I can just decide? You know what I mean? Like, honestly, I still get a little pissed off with, like, one of my mentors is always like, just motherfucking decide, and I'm like, ugh, shut up. Like, it still triggers me a little bit. It's true. But if anybody on here is anything like me, that's— it's like so full. It's like, yeah, I'm not close to that.
You know what I mean?
Like, I can't identify with that. I don't know what that means. That's like when someone said, how do you feel, Mandy? And I was like, I need everybody to shut the hell up and I need a glass of wine. They're like, that's not a feeling. I was like, oh yes, that's a feeling. They're like, no, that's not a feeling. You know what I mean? It's like you're just so— I'm like, what are you talking about, that's not a feeling? Well, now I understand that was like the 6th layer. But, you know, like someone says, just decide, and you're— it's like you feel like you're in this avalanche or this like whitewater just like being pummeled. Just decide? You know what I mean? Like, I'm drowning right now. I can't decide. So for me, the way that I've chosen to identify with it so that I can actually do it and it makes sense to me is like, well, just tell the truth. So it means like, don't pretend, like, don't live in a world where it's like, I'm this badass and life is so great, but really I'm dying on the inside, or I feel like I literally wish I could kill myself, but I'm pretending. Oh, this kind of stuff. And like, that's like one level, but it also could just be like, I'm in a relationship that's solely drowning me and I'm not talking about it. It's just telling the truth. What in your life feels jarring? What does it feel like is being ignored? And what do you need in order to be able to just face that? Just this one thing, just that one thing. Let's have a conversation about it. Let's be open about it. Like, to me, that's what it means to just decide. It's just like stopping for a second and really just telling the truth about something and being honest about what you wish it was like. It's like this, and I wish it was like this. Okay, well, if it was— because the only reason we want money or success is to feel a certain way. We have this illusion, if I have all the money, I'll be able to take care of my family, whatever crap we have in our head.
Yeah.
That would make me feel safe, it would make me feel like I can exhale, I'm finally allowed to enjoy life because people around me that I love aren't suffering. I finally get to enjoy life. So when I realized I didn't finally get to enjoy life, I literally almost had a meltdown. I was just like, I can't handle this. This is too painful. And so that's when the cliché thing that you hear, that you just, you choose to feel how you want to feel right now. You don't wait till you get the result. That's when I finally understood what I wanted to feel was that I was allowed to enjoy my life, even if other people were suffering. Like, when is it allowed for me to just be happy and content and feel peaceful? When there's always going to be people suffering. And so that's when I realized, I— what alignment means is just for me to start making decisions that are in alignment with, I get to feel happy right now. And whatever stories came up, like, yeah, but why are you allowed to be happy if people are starving in Africa? Like, how does that make sense? I just started giving myself permission to ask those questions. Just, okay, I need an answer to that, because I'm not going to give myself permission to relax and enjoy life if I really feel like I I'm ignoring people starving. Like, why are people starving? Is my being happy going to stop them from getting food? Like, what's really happening here? And I went through journeys of answering those questions. And like I said, it's not easy. It's freaking hard to tell the truth to that level, to ask the real questions that you have. But it's hard to not do it. And one of them gets you everything you want and one of them doesn't. So I highly recommend it.
I love it. Gosh, you know, hearing you talk is so refreshing for a woman like me who is like, yeah, you know, everything you're saying totally makes sense. And I too used to get upset when I would hear these things from my mentors, like, it's not that easy. Don't you know my story, my drama and blah? But really it is. It can be easy and it can be light. And I know that people who are watching are going to want to get a whole lot more of you. So I know that you do have a beautiful free gift for our audience called the Breakthrough Series. Can you share a little bit about that? Yeah.
So we finally put together because, well, because people say like on YouTube, I saw this video and I'm like, oh, I forgot about that. So they went back and they found some of the really supportive older videos and then they, along my journey, took older ones to newer ones and they put them together in a series. Really around supporting you to break through whatever's going on right now. And so I'm excited about it. It's the new option on my website. It feels all fancy and nice. So yeah, that's on there. And we've been getting so much feedback on people loving it. So that feels really good too.
Awesome. And we'll put that link below. And then you have another really exciting thing that just got released, and that is your elite group.
So what I know helps everybody have massive success and joy and that peace of mind is the ability to do things now. Now. Now. And now. And now. And now. And now. And what I created a space for was support to feel better.
Hmm.
A container where you're just allowed to be everything and all of who you are. You get to ask any of the questions that come come up for you. You get to celebrate all your wins. So, that means you get to be as big and badass as you possibly could be, and celebrate every single win, including all of the small wins, because what you focus on expands. And, that just turns you into that kind of person where the universe is like, clear, got it, she likes to win, let's send more wins her way. So, it's really a space where I hold them in my energy of doing it now, and having courage, and walking yourself through the tough times, the hard things that come up. I was listening to Les Brown the other day, I had an opportunity to be coached by him the other day. And he said, we're always in a storm, always. And I was like, damn, you're right. There's always— sometimes they're big storms, sometimes they're little storms, but we're always in a storm. And so the number one thing that I can do is support people to show up who they want to be through that storm so they can get more and more clarity about what their values are, what they stand for, what their why is, so they can navigate all the waters. So that's what the membership is. I am so excited about it. Yay!
