In this solo instructional video, Vanessa Lindsay, a nonprofit founder turned mentor, argues that the single most critical step before filing paperwork or writing a mission statement is achieving crystal‑clear clarity about the organization’s purpose. She outlines a three‑question framework that founders must answer: (1) precisely who they serve (demographic, community, challenges), (2) the urgent, fundable problem they aim to solve, and (3) the measurable transformation they will deliver. Using a concrete example—supporting Black teen girls aging out of foster care—she demonstrates how specificity makes a nonprofit’s value proposition fundable and guides marketing, fundraising, and program design. Lindsay warns that without this clarity, founders waste months chasing grants and risk building programs that don’t attract donors. She concludes by inviting viewers to a free weekly “Sunday Clarity Call” through VBL Unlimited (vblunlimited.net), where she will share a detailed roadmap enhanced by modern technology and AI.

So you've decided to launch a nonprofit? That is beautiful. Purpose-driven, needed. But if you skip this one thing I'm about to share, you might waste months chasing grants wondering why it's not working. Let's talk about the first move smart nonprofit founders make before the paperwork, before the mission statement. Hi, I'm Vanessa Lindsay. I started my nonprofit at 21. I had no degree, no money, no idea what a nonprofit was, and definitely had no idea how to file anything. But I did it anyway. And over time, we grew into a multimillion-dollar organization serving thousands of youth and families. Now I help new and aspiring founders launch the right way with purpose, power, and funding. So what you should do before launching your nonprofit is just one word, and that is clarity. Most people start with a mission, but they aren't fully defined the problem they're solving. Here's why I tell my students in the Visionary Building Legacies Incubator, before you file anything, sit down and answer these 3 questions. Number 1: Who exactly do you serve? Not just young people or women, but what age range, what community, and what specific challenges? For example, I serve Black teen girls in foster care transitioning out of the system. That's number 1. Let's talk about number 2: What's the urgent problem you're solving? Don't just say, "I want to help." Say, "I want to help reduce homelessness for teen girls aging out of the foster care program by providing housing and mental health services." You see, that's very specific and that's fundable. That is very tangible. Okay. Number 3, how will your nonprofit create transformation? I want you to paint a clear picture before and after. Donors and grant funders don't fund ideas. They fund results. They really fund results. So you want to make sure it's like, "Hey, I got the results that you're looking for," because they know what the problem is. They want some results. So, for example, I want you to say, "They come to us with no housing, no plan, and no support, but after 90 days they've got shelter, therapy, life skills, and a path forward." So you want to show them that you're giving them something specific, tangible, and fundable. You could do all the paperwork in the world, but without this clarity, you won't know who to market to, how to raise funds, or which programs to build. Because you could say, "Oh, if they build it, they're gonna come." Not necessarily. When you put it, that doesn't mean that the funders are going to come in. That's who you want to come in addition to your clients. So I say this with love, don't file anything until you clarified everything. Okay, so if you're ready to get crystal clear about your nonprofit idea, I want to invite you to join my free weekly Sunday Clarity Call. This is where we talk, connect, and we learn different strategies and techniques in building your nonprofit. I'll walk you through the exact roadmap I used to launch my nonprofit, but it's going to be on steroids because now we have technology and AI. When I started, we didn't have technology and AI. And I'm gonna help you avoid the traps that keep founders stuck and unfunded. The link's in the description. Grab your free seat and bring your questions. And hey, your nonprofit is more than an idea. It's a legacy waiting to be built. Let's get it right from the very start. Let's get it, let's get it in there, okay? So I'll see you on the inside. And if you don't remember anything, if you think, oh my gosh, I forgot, remember VBL Unlimited. That means Visionaries Building Legacies Unlimited because we are unlimited. And then at the end put .net. So we're at vblunlimited.net, and let's go get some clarity and let's get that nonprofit rocking and rolling. I'll see you on the inside.
