This is a YouTube video titled '"Lifebook came from my deepest pain" How Jon Butcher Started Lifebook' created on February 12, 2021. It features Jon Butcher discussing the origins of Lifebook, a personal development tool he created from his experiences overcoming severe anxiety and agoraphobia. He explains how Lifebook evolved from a binder of personal development notes into a structured system with 12 chapters, each addressing different life areas, and how it helped him and his wife, Missy, build an extraordinary life.
Chapters
Over time, that binder just kept growing and growing, and it evolved into what is lifebook today? 12 beautiful chapters, 4 profound questions in each chapter. What do you believe about this category of your life? What precisely do you want in this area of your life? Why do you want that? What's the purpose behind that vision? And finally, great, what are you going to do about it? Or what do you need to do to make that happen in your life? Lifebook is the tool that's responsible for the extraordinary life that Missy and I have been able to build together. But what most people don't realize is that that's not the way it started. Lifebook literally came from my deepest pain. The biggest challenge that we've ever had in our lives is about 25, 26 years ago, I was struck by a severe anxiety disorder, full blown agoraphobia, which basically, I was housebound for a couple months with the worst debilitating anxiety you can imagine. I mean, I literally couldn't do anything. I couldn't drive the car. I couldn't go to a restaurant. It was nuts. And I was going through such a difficult time. Missy didn't know what to do. My dad was actually watching late night TV and he saw a couple infomercials, one by Tony Robbins and one by another personal development lady. And he bought me two personal development programs that year because he thought it might help the horrendous pain I was going through. And so that was Tony Robbins, Personal Power 2, and a program called Attacking Anxiety by Lucinda Basak, which is a phenomenal program. That was my very first introduction to personal development ever, never done anything like that before. And I listened to those two programs and it helped tremendously. I felt like I got my feet on the ground a little bit, and I kept the notes that I was taking during those programs in a little binder. And like, I would refer to those notes every single day. I would have that binder with me everywhere I went because it would lessen my anxiety just to read those empowering notes from those courses. And so that year, as I started to very, very slowly make my way back from that difficult situation, I continued to do personal development programs. Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, all the old greats, Brian Tracy, you know, the classics. I just started consuming personal development content voraciously. And I kept all my notes in this little binder that just kept growing and growing and growing. That was the very first iteration of a Lifebook ever. Over time, I realized that I needed to categorize these notes. I had certain notes on my physical health. I had certain notes on my love relationship, certain notes on my emotional life. That's really what I was dealing with, is just hardcore emotional issues that were causing me a lot of pain. I had notes on my career and my financial life. And I realized that there are specific areas of life that I'd have to master if I wanted to really have an extraordinary life that worked at a high level in every important area, which I did. I didn't just want to get out of pain. I realized I saw a better vision for myself. I saw a brighter future, and I really wanted to make that happen. So I started to categorize my personal development notes. I had my love chapter, I had my health chapter, I had my money chapter, I had my emotional, my intellectual, my parenting, etc. And over time, that binder just kept growing and growing and it evolved into what is lifebook today? 12 beautiful chapters, 4 profound questions in each chapter. What do you believe about this category of your life? What precisely do you want in this area of your life? Why do you want that? What's the purpose behind that vision? And finally, great, what are you going to do about it? What do you need to do to make that happen in your life? Well, that tool ended up being our primary go to source of inspiration, of planning, of strategic intelligence in our life. And we used our Lifebook over about a 15, 20 year period to navigate to the extraordinary life that we have created for ourselves and for each other. But how it started, it started from literally the biggest challenge that I've ever had, the most painful thing that I've ever gone through. So, you know, that's just I'm so grateful that I was able to turn the most difficult situation in my life into literally the most beautiful thing in our lives right now, which is this wonderful tool that we use to navigate toward the life that we truly want to live.
