A short monologue by Vishen Lakhiani that distinguishes leadership from management: leadership is grounded in people choosing to follow, while using formal authority or title to compel behavior is management and manipulation. The speaker argues that true leadership requires understanding, love, and enabling others to be their best, and that manipulation cannot produce excellence or 'passionate obedience.'

The only source of a leader's power is that other people choose to follow that leader. That's the only source of a leader's power. You might be thinking, Monty, you're wrong. You can get power by being the CEO and being in charge and being able to fire people. That's not leadership. That's management. If you're using your title to get someone to do something, that's management and it's manipulation. You cannot manipulate your way to greatness. You can manipulate your way to getting people to show up at 9am and leave at 5 and punch in on time and and do a job, but you can't manipulate people into being brilliant. There's no such thing as passionate obedience. Gary Heil, my friend, said that. So if you want something excellent in any part of your life, whether it be with your spouse, whether it be leading a company, whether it be your relationship with your friends, you need to focus first on understanding, love and letting it flow through you and helping them be at their best.
