The Top 6 Health And Fitness Myths You Should Know About | Ronan Oliveira

YouTube video (Feb 16, 2021) by Ronan Oliveira hosted on Mindvalley that debunks six common fitness myths: (1) fitness is only about looks, (2) women get bulky from lifting weights, (3) cardio is the best way to lose weight, (4) ab exercises burn belly fat, (5) you must train by body type (ectomorph/mesomorph/endomorph), and (6) longer workouts are always better. The speaker argues for efficient, short, high-quality strength training and promotes Mindvalley’s 10X fitness system and a free hour-plus masterclass.

Have you seen that? All fitness programs try to get you as exhausted as possible, sweating a lot, because this is what people feel. It's a good workout. And then they put you to train for many hours in a day, for many days in a week, because you want to feel that you're doing a hard type of work. But the truth is, for us to get real results in improving your fitness, into getting stronger, into transforming your body, into losing weight, we don't need to fall for all the traps of the traditional fitness programs. And in this video, I want to bust a couple of the myths that we have to make sure that we don't need to fall for them again. The first, the number one myth here is first, that getting fit is all about the looks. And even though health and fitness makes your body look great is just a byproduct, I just want you to imagine how much more energy you can experience from your body once it's free of pain, once it has a optimal metabolism, it knows where to distribute energy. Once it can absorb all nutrients, once it has a space in your whole muscle mass to keep the nutrients that you eat, once it can move freely, once it can, you know, explode emotion, how much more focus you can have in the brain from a body that has no inflammation. There's so many other areas of life that starts to improve once you start getting more results into fitness, because the body is this vessel that provides you your own human experience, all your emotions and all sensations. They are chemical signals in your brain. And all of this has to do with the type of exercise that you do or don't do, the type of food that you do or don't do, the way that you recover and that you don't. So this is the first thing that I want to be very clear. Fitness is not only about the looks, but it's something that goes beyond your body. The second myth that we have here about fitness is that women who exercise and lift weights, they get bulky. And this is a big one. And this is what keep most of the women say, yeah, yeah, I wish that, you know, I know that doing strength training is a good thing. I wish I could do it. But, no, I don't want to get bulky. I don't want to. First of all, I want you to look at Monique. This is Monique. She's one of our 10x coaches. She trains with strength training twice in a week with very heavy weights. Now, I wanted to ask you, does Monique look bulky to you? I'm pretty sure she doesn't. And the main Reason here that this type of theme or myth come to our minds is that we see sometimes notice bodybuilding competitions and then we see women bodybuilders who have very side muscles. And then women look at them and say, you know, if I go to the gym and I start lifting weights, what if I wake up tomorrow and boof, I have a biceps, right? I have something huge on my body. Let me tell you that for a woman's body to reach a very sizable state in terms of muscle, you need a couple of things to be super well aligned. First, you need a very gifted genetics because there are so many women who are actually trying, who are athletes and then trying to get a sizable body for that type of competition and they just cannot get there because they don't have the genetics that allow them to shape their bodies in that way. If you have a very unique and gifted genetics, then you need a massive amount of training, then you need a super sizable nutrition, and then you need other hormones, steroid hormones, because women have 10 times less testosterone than men. You need testosterone to grow muscle mass. So you need to use those steroid hormones and maybe you may get there in, I would say, maybe 10 years. Myth number three is that cardio is the best way to lose weight. If you have seen a couple of other videos of mine in the mindvalley Channel, you know that I hit on this, but every time, because this is totally not true. And one of the most common mistakes that people make, an excessive amount of cardio, first, not only is inefficient to burn fat and lose weight. If you want to lose weight, your first strategy should be aimed at nutrition and maybe your second strategy and your fourth and intense strategy as well. And when it comes to exercise, to the exercise bit of losing fat, you don't want something that is burning your muscle mass away, you want something that is building muscle mass. And so you don't want to do excessive amount of cardio because that decreases your metabolism and, and it puts you under the risk of losing your muscle mass. You want a type of strength training or resistance training that is adding tension to your muscle fibers and is signaling your brain that not only this muscle fiber is important, so please keep it because we are using every day, but please, let's have more of that so we can reshape our body and increase our metabolism. Myth number four is that I need to do ab exercises to burn belly fat. This is, you know, you can see so many programs burn belly fat, abs program, burn belly fat, this and that fitness routine and this couldn't be further from the truth. There is one whole video. If you want to know exactly how to burn belly fat, there's a whole video that I made about this. But the short answer is there is no way that you can tap into the parts of your body that your body is burned fat from. Burning fat in the body comes in a sequential way. The body burns belly from the fat after it finishes burning fat from other parts of your body, like your shoulders or your neck or your back and things like that. Usually for men, the last part where fat will be burned from is the belly from women is around the hips and the thighs. And so for you to burn belly fat is not about a specific workout. It's not about specific food. It's about burning fat for long enough so you can burn fat from all the rest, all the other parts of the body, and eventually burn belly fat. It's not about an ab workout, a specific type of food. Myth number five is that you need to train according to your body type. And I know this is a strong marketing argument because if I come to you say, yeah, your workout is not working right. Why? Because you're not training according to your body type. You are an ectomorph. You're an endomorph, you're a mesomorph. It turns out that this study, back when it was decades ago, when it was when these body types were defined, they were not defined based on any scientific evidence, and they were not defined to help people choose what type of food or what type of workouts. There were just a bunch of trends that they were seeing, a huge amount of profiles of people. And so, okay, some people tend have the tendency of having smaller joints and their body is more slim and metabolism is high. And some other people look to be the opposite. And this was never even scientifically validated. And more than that, your body can change from one type to the other. And there's no training, there's no physiological difference, there's no genetic difference. There's no mechanism that works different because you have a specific, different body type, one because you can change it. And because the way of developing muscle mass and the way of burning fat is based on a human body mechanism. You need to be in a certain caloric deficit to burn fat. You need to add tension to your muscle fibers and give enough amount of protein for you to build muscle mass. There is no specific way for you to do this depending on your body type. And this is something that you don't want to fall for because there Are a lot of programs that are trying to use this as a mechanism to sell you something that is not necessarily effective. The last myth of this video is about the longer you work out, the better it is. And this is a very convincing one because a lot of the workouts that we see from traditional types of fitness training are pretty long. And whenever they get easier, they get longer. But think about a different mechanism. Think that you want to get a sun panel and then go outside in the sun and if you stay there for five minutes, it's very strong, maybe get a little bit tan. If you stay for 50 minutes, you get more. If you can stay for 20 minutes, maybe you get the most that you can. If you stay under a burning sun for two hours, at some point you just don't get more tan. At some point you just get burned. It just increases the amount of inflammation. There's a certain limit that your body can transform that stimulus into another adaptation. And after that it's just burning, it's just creating inflammation. And with fitness training, a lot of times it works on the same way. What you need to do is not the amount of work, what you need to do is the quality of work for your muscles to grow, for you to develop strength. You don't need to spend hours lifting weights. You just need a few very intense, very heavy and very quality muscle contractions that trigger the adaptive response of the body. And they are the ones who really make the difference. And all the, you know, 20 minutes before that is just a build up for what really matters. So what if you could cut all 90% of a training that is not taking you anywhere and focus on 10% that really gives you the result? What would that be? This is what we've been developing over the past several years with Mindvalue, Mindvalley's fitness system called 10X.
