Short transcript excerpt from a conversation between Josh Trent and Elise Micheals discussing societal normalization and misunderstanding of trauma. Elise argues society is ‘trauma ignorant’ and ‘trauma confused,’ and they briefly touch on Elise’s work supporting men’s mental health and why she focuses on men.
Or what are some of the ways that just human beings normalize trauma?
First of all, because they just don't understand that it's trauma. I think our parents generation normalized beating kids because obedience was the way to have healthy children.
Is our society trauma informed or is our society trauma ignorant?
We're totally trauma ignorant. And I think that we're trauma confused because there's a lot of gurus out there who are saying things about trauma that make it more confusing. And so everybody thinks that they have the correct idea when many people do not.
For a woman to make a business and a life and a media platform around supporting the mental health of men, I just don't necessarily see that too often. Why men? Why now? Why you?
It was this perfect alignment of I'm ready to help serve and it was men who reached out to me and I just saw that they didn't have a lot of support when it came to mental health, so I just decided that I would be that support for them.
