Short conversational clip from a YouTube video (uploaded by Josh Trent on Feb 20, 2010) in which two speakers discuss how cows are naturally grass-eaters, the health problems that result when cows are fed corn (including antibiotics and hormones), and the recommendation to buy free-range, grass-fed beef — with a request for local San Diego sources.
Thanks for having us on the farm today. I mean, honestly, my biceps are sore, my lower back feels good and I feel good that I know exactly where the food's coming from. But one thing I wanted to ask you is that cows, we talked about it earlier. No cows around here. Cows weren't really designed to eat corn. Corn grows way high in the air. A cow's neck is this long. What are your thoughts on that?
Well, cows naturally are supposed to eat grass. That's how they were evolutionarily designed and that's what they're supposed to eat. So when cows are eating corn, they're going to deal with a lot of health problems. And just as you are, what you eat, the cow is what the cow eats. So when the cow's not eating what it's supposed to eat, that directly translates to you when you're eating that as well. So if you feel sick after eating a hamburger, there's a pretty good reason for feeling sick after eating the hamburger. Additionally, the cows that eat corn develop a lot of health problems and are infused with antibiotics and hormones to somehow digest that food and make an edible food like substance that we like to call cows. To eat healthful cows, you want to find free range, grass fed. And there are places here in San Diego that supply that local cows as well as you can support by reading the label and getting to know your rancher. Great.
So where in San Diego can you go and get really good grass fed beef? Give us the scoop. Where do you get your. Where does the farmer get his grass fed beef?
Different markets will supply grass fed beef. Whole Foods is one of them. It tends to be quite expensive. Jimbo's naturally is another local market that does supply consciously raised beef. My personal favorite, and this is not a supported plug or anything, is Homegrown Meats in downtown La Jolla. Homegrown Meats is a local butcher shop supplying grass fed, pasture raised, hormone free, antibiotic free cows, chickens and other meat substances that come from a local farm in Palomar Mountain.
