Transcript excerpt from a YouTube talk arguing that fear of others' opinions strongly restricts human potential. The speaker links this fear to an evolved rejection-detection mechanism, explains how it hijacks thinking and creativity, and contrasts society's focus on performance (grades, approval) with a missing emphasis on discovering and teaching purpose.

Fear of people's opinions is one of the greatest constrictors of people's potential. It's such an intense thing that we will abandon our sense of self or the approval of others so we have this mechanism in our brain that is scanning for potential rejection because rejection 250,000 years ago was a near death sentence yeah, it's not now it feels like it though that mechanism is so powerful that it hijacks our ability to think clearly and creatively and critically if we don't have a good relationship with how our inner body, our inner self is working we're caught off guard and if we don't have the tools to be able to manage that it's very difficult where do we even begin as a society to shift that narrative re anchor to purpose what am I here for? We haven't introduced that at a young age on how to think about purpose but we do introduce how to perform how to get the right grade we're obsessed with performance and so early on we are force ranks stacked grades compared to.
