Short podcast clip (YouTube) featuring Josh Trent discussing responsibility, stoic philosophy, and personal growth. Trent links the idea of mutual responsibility (‘beast of burden’) to Stoic ideas (Epictetus), and emphasizes emotional regulation, breath, and courageous conversations—especially in parenting—as central to being fully expressed.
If you want to be fully expressed, you have to find someone and shackle responsibility to each other. I think he called it being a beast of burden. And I love that because it falls on some of the lines of Epictetus and the stoic philosophy. Well, you know, don't ask for a lighter load. Ask for a stronger back. I think that's so beautiful because it hasn't gotten any easier for me as a dad at all. I would actually say that it's gotten way harder, but my ability to regulate my emotions has been the determining factor.
Gotten way stronger.
My capacity to breathe, my connection to my heart, those hard conversations, that's the juice. That's the real shit that we're all hungry for in this world.
To me, oftentimes it comes down to you make everything about yourself when you're single, but when you're in a committed relationship, and especially when there's a child, especially as a man, you're responsible for something more than just yourself. And that's not a curse. That's a great blessing. You're compelled to make life and situations more than just about yourself.
