Short excerpt from a YouTube podcast (host Josh Trent and a guest) discussing contemporary portrayals of masculinity. The speakers criticize certain influencer-driven norms (e.g., David Goggins-style or Andrew Tate-style messaging and parts of the ‘red pill’ community) that valorize extreme fitness, suffering, and hardship as prerequisites for being "a real man."
What do you make of.
These characters.
Out there like that? It's not just Goggins, it's also some forms of Tate. It's also a lot of the people in the red pill community where unless you have a perfect six pack and unless you suffer and unless you enjoy suffering and you crave suffering, then you're somehow less of a man.
I believe what we're seeing is a rebirth of masculinity for the next era. What's coming next after the Tates? What I think they're maybe even evolving into, and the reason men are so thorough, thirsty for that content, is they represent a juvenile, an adolescence of masculinity emerging from fledglinghood out of the shadow of women stepping forward and saying, no, I am a man. I won't let anyone tell me what to do. We're trying to emerge into a secure, mature masculinity that is coming next that I think will take our place back in the world as men. Sitting in the world, making sense of the world, creating order from chaos. Masculinity has to come into its full adulthood.
