This YouTube episode (Josh Trent, uploaded March 21, 2023) features John Wineland discussing personal growth and leadership through integrating personal wounds. In this excerpt Wineland argues “the wound is where you serve from,” describing how leaning into the loss and grief of Claire has improved his teaching, affected past relationships (which he links to unresolved grief), and informed his view that much men’s work misses the interior, steadying aspect of masculinity beyond performative bravado. The clip emphasizes emotional integration, heart-centered leadership, and the spectrum of human experience (from deep pain to ecstatic bliss).

The wound is where you serve from. You integrate your wound and it allows you to be a better leader. I do feel that that's true and I do feel that leaning into the loss and grief of Claire has been really helpful for me as a teacher to learn, you know, how to share from there and be able to access my heart from there. I'd been in a couple of relationships that didn't work out and I think a lot of that was mainly because I was still grieving Claire or choosing things from a confused place. Like, I'm so blessed at the spectru of life that I've been able to live. I've experienced the most gut wrenching pain and the most, you know, ecstatic bliss that, that a human can experience. This is something that I think a lot of men's work misses right is that the masculine is not in experience. It's not just pounding your chest and warrioring up unless you are able to stay connected to that which is never changing.
