Order matters that if you eat your protein first, it sort of distracts your body and distracts the pancreas from producing too much insulin. So you can tolerate some carbs towards the end, but if the protein comes first, it can stabilize you.
The order in which you eat your food makes a big difference when you have protein, fat and fiber first. So let's say it's like steak and broccoli, or fish and broccoli, or Brussels sprouts and steak and then your potato, or in your case, the cake after the there's going to be less of this postprandial glucose spike versus the opposite when you had the potato first or the cake first. And that's because it slows digestion when you eat protein and fat, and it activates the satiety hormones cholecystokin, leptin, peptide yy. So you will see a better response.
