William Featherstone discusses how entrepreneurs must lead themselves before leading others. He learned graphic design and web development to build his brand, but drifted from his vision while serving clients. He deliberately slowed down to reconnect with what he actually wanted to influence.
Let me ask you a question.
So why is leading yourself first important when leading? Like, we're in the age of everybody's the CEO, everybody's this entrepreneur, but they're forgetting to lead themselves first. Like, everyone wants, oh, I have a team of this, this, this, and this, or we do, I do this, this, and this. But like, getting back to leading yourself, like, why is that important in leadership? Um, and even as an entrepreneur, you, you have to commit to making sure—
you have to commit to keeping the promises to yourself, right? If you want to achieve what it is that you have in your vision, Ryan, you've got to commit to that. We can get lost, and this is, this is something that like I've experienced in entrepreneurship, bro. Like the, the whole build out of me being where I'm at has been me learning how to do these things, these things for myself, right? These are services, these are actions, these are things that I was like, man, I'm not paying nobody to do this stuff, and I'm intelligent enough to learn how to do graphic design, website, this, that, that. I knew I was going to need it all for my brand, but in that, I picked up a skill set, people saw it, saw value in it, and then were willing to exchange value. And I got away from the vision. Right? Because I got to the point where I was serving. Now, I'm not mad at that because I gained a whole nother understanding of leadership, knowledge, experience, uh, teamwork, collaboration, partnerships. I got a lot that I needed as an entrepreneur growing into a different space to try to scale, right? But I lost the vision, and it wasn't until maybe recently, over the past year or so, And I started slowing things down, and it was tough because when you slow stuff down as an entrepreneur, everything slows down. That's money, that's people that were coming around, that's everything, man. So, um, in that, I got that solitude. I got some time to myself to start to get back to who is Will. And you could say that you're an influencer But what are you really influencing? What are you trying to impact? I think as a leader, you have to be clear on that, because if you're not, anything can be attracted to you. You'll allow anything into that environment, and it doesn't have any checks and balances. And if you're not leading yourself in the right direction, you're just kind of accepting anything that's coming in, man, anything could happen to, to your brand, and you can get consumed with other people's stuff.
