this is what happens when people have AI fatigue...

A Chinese animated film made by a mother and son with no experience grew from an $800 opening to a $20 million hit. Its success shows audiences are tired of polished AI media and craving handmade work, plus the communal theater experience it sparked.

Okay, we have to talk about this. What happened with this movie is a perfect representation of how AI has completely changed our perception of art and media. So if you haven't heard about this, this animated movie called Niu Lai was released earlier this month in China. It's completely unknown. There was zero marketing. The entire production team was only 2 people. It was a mother-son duo. They had no professional filmmaking experience. They spent 5 years essentially making this movie from scratch. It was so bad that in the first week of release, The box office was less than $800, but the people who watched it started posting about it online because they were like, what is going on? How is this movie allowed in theaters? Clips of it started circulating and people just went completely insane. The box office is projected to go over $20 million. An essentially zero-budget movie is more popular than The Odyssey. And there are 2 points I want to unpack here. First of all, it's really showing us how people are just getting so tired of perfectly manufactured screens. With AI fatigue, Art is really moving away from the perfect technique, showing off the flashy animations and CGI effects. Something so raw and natural and handmade is so refreshing, regardless of how technically unsound it is. The second thing here relates to the social dynamic and the culture in China. Distance and disconnection is being exacerbated by AI, but Neolight is completely reviving the experience of in-person cinema. People can laugh together. People are buying out theaters. Making letters with their seat placement. Theaters are making the posters themselves by hand. It's really saying something about what we need as a society at the moment.
