How teen AI app developer got denied from 15 colleges

Zach Yadegari, 18, built Cal AI, an app that estimates calories from photos. Despite a 4.0 GPA and a multimillion-dollar startup, he was rejected by 15 of 18 colleges, including Ivies, but got into University of Miami. He still wants to go for the social experience.

53 minutes after the hour now. A high school senior who has made millions developing an AI calorie tracking app revealing he was rejected from— wait for it— 15 out of 18 colleges he applied to, including some Ivy League schools. But who's laughing now? Zach Yadegari joining us here on the program. Zach, I am so excited to meet you. First of all, for those of you who are wondering, he did get accepted to a great school. Shall we show them together? It's all about the U, the University of Miami. So congratulations to you on that. How did you come up with this idea? What made you want to create this calorie tracking app?
Calii is an app where you can track your calories just by taking a picture of your food. I was a skinny kid growing up and found the existing solutions to track calories very unsustainable for my lifestyle. You would have to weigh your food on a scale, manually type in every ingredient you were eating, and I knew there had to be a better solution.
Here's what I'm curious about. You come up with this fantastic idea, Cal AI. I'm gonna download it the second we're no longer doing this segment. Believe me on that. When you get rejected from so many different schools, I think it says a lot about your personal grit and your willingness to tough it out despite the disappointments. Tell me about how that happened and what you thought. By the way, you're a 4.0 student, aren't you?
Yeah, my unweighted GPA is a 4.0. Yeah, so what happened, do you think? I think that college admissions tries to place students in this rubric, a very tight box that makes it difficult for students that have achievements outside of school, like an entrepreneur, to really stand out.
Okay, so with that in mind, there are about 20 seconds to go. Why go to college at all? I mean, you've already done something pretty amazing.
I've sacrificed a lot of social events in order to really achieve what I have, and I'm 18. I want to hang out with other 18-year-olds. I don't want to go straight into the business world just yet.
Well, I'm just going to tell you, Zach, you are impressive. You're a great young man. He's tall and, and doing all the right stuff. I'm jealous, but I'm proud of you, brother. Thank you. Best of luck to you, and really appreciate you spending some time with us this morning. Again, the app is called Cal AI.
It's on the App Store or Android Play Store.
