Adam Markel on Resilience & Recovery ACAM

A short talk by Adam Markel on resilience, recovery, and self-care emphasizing the link between recovery practices and performance capacity. Markel uses personal anecdotes (marriage, an old car) to illustrate running oneself 'on empty', outlines a four-area recovery map (duration & frequency, optimal time of day, energy profile, holistic mental/physical/emotional/spiritual rituals), and offers an assessment tool for individual resilience profiles.

This would be an activity that we could bake in maybe for next year's. Next year's event, a little R and R. Right. Because without it, we're in trouble. This is my wife, Randy and I, and we're married 30 years on Monday. This will be our 30th anniversary on Monday, which my beloved. And I obviously have some hair in that picture. That's a Honda Prelude, 1985, I think. And this was a magic car. Say, Adam, why was it a magic car? Come on, one more time. It was a magic car because it didn't need gas. I could run this car on empty. Anybody ever driven a car you could run on empty forever? And I had no money in school, so I could run this car on empty all the time until I was heading to a family event. And then what do you think happened? It ran on empty till it just decided to stop. And I think that is very much what's going on with us. Except we don't have a gauge that says we're running on E. We just run ourselves on empty again and again. And don't we do that? Or am I the only one? Yeah. So we take ourselves for granted. But I want you to get this, because the relationship and the research is all clear that there's a relationship between your recovery times and your capacity, capacity to perform. Meaning getting work done, getting stuff done, bringing money in, collecting money. All the stuff that we do in business directly related to just how much energy you've got, how well you are. I mean, imagine you had to run a marathon tomorrow. Would you have done what you did last night? Maybe, maybe not. What would you have ensured that you did today? Woke up, had water, had the right breakfast, made sure you got sleep, whatever it is. But taking care of yourself is all about how it is that you show up as that most productive version of yourself. Which it's ironic because when it comes to self care, people think it's what, self selfish? Exactly. But it's really selfless because the better version of you is the better version of that person that can handle all the stressors that we talked about at the beginning. So the key is to develop these things before you need them. We developed our resilience on the beach before we were tested. Not every day was a day when the waves were crazy like that in the middle of the week, we had a few thousand people on the beach. And in those times we took care of ourselves. We created rituals for resilience. So in a few moments, I'm going to give you guys access to a tool that's going to help you to understand where you are when it comes to resilience. It's an assessment tool and it's our gift to you. But there's basically four areas of the recovery map that I'll quickly touch on. It's duration and frequency. What's the optimal duration and frequency of your recovery times? That's a question to ask. What's the optimal time of day? Because all of us are different. Some of us are morning folks, some of us are evening. No two are the same. The energy profile. Like for me, it would maybe seem odd because here I am, up in front of all of you. But I. I'm an introvert, which means I gather my energy when I'm looking to recharge. I'm alone, I meditate, I'm quiet, I'm around small groups of people. My brother, on the other hand, when he wants to re energize, he gets into a stadium of people because that's his energy profile. Introvert, extrovert, whatever you want to call it. Tomato, tomato, same thing. Just got to understand who you are, what makes you tick. And then, of course, this holistic approach. Mental, physical, emotional, spiritual. These play into the rituals you create for yourself throughout the day.
