Adam Markel delivers a brief, personal reflection about feeling vulnerability and shame after a hospital visit. He describes relief at leaving the hospital, immediate shame and guilt for feeling weak, hugging his children but refusing to discuss the experience with his wife or others, and soon reverting to previous behaviors with increased urgency to reach retirement.

And it felt that wash over me felt so good and a split second later like literally in the next thought I was ashamed. That's the only word I could use for it. I felt guilty and I felt shame in being in feeling as weak and being as weak and vulnerable as I was in that moment. I don't know what to do with that. I was thankful I got out of the hospital. I went home, I hugged my kids. I hugged them hard and I then refused to talk about it. I didn't talk about it with my wife. I didn't share it with anybody else. I just turned and ran as far away from that incident as I possibly could and two or so weeks later I literally was just back at it. Everything I was doing before is like I was doing it all over again and more so in all honesty because I felt like I need, I needed to really get to my retirement point faster.
